  • In Samsung's Home Turf, Apple's iPhone and iPad Make Up 14% of the Local Market


    Samsung appears to have a decided home-field advantage in South Korea but a recent study looking at the market share in the country shows that Apple’s iOS accounts for roughly one out of every seven mobile devices, even in its rivals home turf. The newest figures from the mobile industry analyst firm Flurry takes a look at the mobile device market in South Korea, which is one of the world’s most tech savvy nations. Flurry found more than 33 million active smartphones and tablets in the country with Apple’s iOS platform accounting for 14% of them.

    Manufacturers based out of South Korea enjoyed the most success in the country with the chief Apple rival, Samsung, being the most preferred device maker in the country. Samsung held a 60% share of the South Korean mobile device market according to Flurry, followed by LG, which is also based out of South Korea, with a 15% share. Pan Tech, another South Korean firm came in behind Apple with just 10% of the market. All other Android manufacturers amounted to just one percent of the market.

    The study also found the “phablets,” the term for larger-screened smartphones sized somewhere between a normal smartphone and a small tablet, are remarkably popular in South Korea. Phablets make up only seven percent of the mobile devices worldwide but account for 41 of Android and ISO devices in South Korea. The devices are so popular in the country that they appear to be depressing sales of tablets. Although Flurry sees tablets accounting for 14% of devices worldwide, they account for only five percent in South Korea as a result.

    Aside from South Korea, Flurry’s new analysis indicates that tablets aren’t a fad. The segment has grown from just two percent of the market six months ago to seven percent in the present. A number of analysts have recently speculated that Apple would soon enter the phablet segment, with the latest reports putting a larger iPhone device on the schedule for some time in 2014.

    Although Samsung may have the advantage in South Korea, its products reportedly aren’t as well loved by their owners as Apple’s are. Apple seems to already be topping Samsung when it comes to customer satisfaction for the iPhone. Another survey on tablet satisfaction also saw the iPad beating out Samsung and LG tablets for the third year in a row.

      Only 14% that's 86% of the market Apple don't have. What a failure in sales. Someone needs sacking or the high cost of Apple gear needs reducing!!

      Them Asians, of course they would stick together to buy home grown stuffs to help their own country's economy. That doesn't mean the user's experience is the same.
