  • Microsoft Unveils Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2

Microsoft recently unveiled the successors to its Surface line of tablets announcing both the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2. As the name suggests, the Surface 2 is an upgrade to the existing Surface RT tablet while the Surface Pro 2 is an upgrade to the existing Surface Pro.

The Surface 2 includes a Tegra 4 processor, a 1920 x 1080 resolution and 25% better battery life. The new device is both thinner and lighter than the original Surface RT, retaining the adjustable kickstand. Instead of USB 2.0 ports it uses USB 3.0 and includes Microsoft’s full Office software which includes Outlook.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2, which is the next iteration of the Surface Pro tablet is equipped with an Intel Haswell processor that boosts graphics performance by 50% and battery life by 75%. Overall, performance is said to be up 20% while the Surface Pro 2 includes double the memory (8 GB as opposed to 4 GB) with the form factor remaining unchanged.

The two new tablets are accompanied by a new Touch Cover ($119) that boasts additional sensors, new gestures, a thinner design, and backlighting. There’s also a new Power Cover ($150-$200), designed to add additional battery life to the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2. The Surface 2 is priced at $449 and is once again set to compete with Apple’s full-sized iPad. The Surface Pro 2 touts an $899 price tag, putting it nearly on part with the MacBook Air. Microsoft intends to continue selling the original Surface RT for $349 to try and lure consumers into the Windows Mobile ecosystem.

Despite a vigorous anti-iPad campaign boasting its Surface tablets, Microsoft continues to see poor sales of the devices and was forced to initiate price cuts after taking a $900 million write-down for the Surface RT.

If you or someone you know is somewhat interested in the upcoming Microsoft tablets, the company will begin accepting pre-orders for the second-generation devices on September 24, shipping them on October 22, which falls in time with the time frame of a prospective October Apple event which could potentially introduce Apple’s fifth-generation iPad and Retina iPad mini.

The hardware on the Surface Pro 2 was legit, but these specs are even better! Where they fall WAY short is the software... Windows 8 is a decent desktop platform, but shrinking it down into a tablet and putting that Metro GUI on top is NOT going to suddenly make it user friendly... If they could just bring in their mobile phone team and sit them down with the desktop team, I'm sure someone would be able to figure out a way to balance both those worlds...

I for one am ready for an all-in-one device... I hate having to lug around my MacBook Pro and iPad with me everywhere, because both do certain things very well that the other can't... But until there is a viable alternative, that is still the best solution for me...

Windows 7 would work way better on the Surface IMO. I hate the feel of Windows 8, and I'm sure Microsoft would sell more Surfaces if they got rid of the Windows 8 feel.

Either way, the iPad still murders the Surface...

Wow, some companies just don't learn. Hey Steve, you might want to call Thorsten and see how his company handles mistakes.

They should sell it running Windows 7 and I'd actually replace my PC with one. Sometime it's nice to have a cheap PC compared to a MacBook but running Windows 8 is too painful IMO.

Bloated and overpriced. All IT PC users at my job can have one instead of a PC if they choose. There are only a handful of users with them in all and only 1 IT guy uses one as a desktop..that says a lot.
