  • It's Black Friday for BlackBerry on Wall Street

On Friday, BlackBerry announced the devastating news that it is relinquishing nearly 40% of its workforce and taking a massive loss of close to $1 billion in its second quarter.

By BlackBerry's own admission, the failure of the BlackBerry Z10 is the primary reason for the somber news that close to 5,000 people will be losing their jobs.

The loss is mainly the result of a write-off of unsold BlackBerry phones, as well as $72 million in restructuring charges. The company said that it would discontinue two of the six phones it offers.
“We are implementing the difficult, but necessary operational changes announced today to address our position in a maturing and more competitive industry, and to drive the company toward profitability," says Thorsten Heins, President and Chief Executive Officer of BlackBerry.

"Going forward," he added, "we plan to refocus our offering on our end-to-end solution of hardware, software and services for enterprises and the productive, professional end user. This puts us squarely on target with the customers that helped build BlackBerry into the leading brand today for enterprise security, manageability and reliability.”

In today's market, this is what happens if you fall asleep behind the wheel. I think it's too late for blackberry.

I actually think that would be a good idea, I mean hell, it either would help them out a lot, or just keep them in their current situation. Why not try it out?

I seem to remember the blackberry ceo making nastry remarks about apple and the iphone. Maybe you should worry about your problems and not your competitors?

Why would HP want to go into business with a failing company?

That and both WebOs and BB have basically zero apps so they would still be starting from scratch and way behind.

Sucks for them! They should sell now before they're worth $0...it was only a matter of time, they sat and did nothing while Apple, Google, HTC, Samsung etc started making great smartphones and OS's. They thought they could stay in the company business forever, even when businesses started make the move to smartphones...not the best decision.

I see nothing wrong with their phone's per say, it's just that almost ALL their models look alike, & nothing new to them, idk why they stopped production of the Storm models, sure most people don't like touch screens but if that statement were a lie, why do So many people have iPhones,Galaxy's & iPods? I mean Maybe they need more software collaboration. But to cut some 5000 jobs is pretty harsh. It seems the end is close for BB. i just hope they don't end up like Dell's Streak, the Palm OS, other various Dead companies. Just like BBM which was SUPPOSE to come out today...POW!!! All this Hype and Nodda..they tweeted some B/S about their servers. A Delay & they DIDN'T anticipate THIS!!!, & They WONDER why they are among the DYING Breed. It's like I said & will say it AGAIN....it's an Apple/Samsung world & everyone ELSE is Just living in it.
