  • iPad: 1 GHz CPU, 9.7" Screen, WiFi. Starting at $499.

Apple introduced its latest device to the world at an event in San Francisco today: the iPad. Saying that it fit into the space between the iPhone and the MacBook, company CEO Steve Jobs praised the new device as Apple's "most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price.” The lowest-end model will retail for $499 US, and a fully-loaded 64GB iPad with 3G connectivity will sell for $829. The iPad will start shipping to customers in April, with 3G models coming a month after that.

The iPad is a half-inch (1.25 cm) thick, weighs 1.5 pounds (688 g) and has a 9.7-inch IPS touch screen with a 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch. It comes in three models: 16, 32 and 64 GB, with and without 3G; all models have WiFi and Bluetooth wireless. The battery lasts for 10 hours, and according to Apple, the iPad can remain on standby for a month without needing a charge. It comes with a standard 30-pin iPod/iPhone dock connector and can output HD video at 576x480 pixels, progressive or interlaced, with the optional Apple Composite A/V Cable.

“It’s so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone,” Jobs said of the iPad, sitting on a couch as he demoed its features. He showed the different capabilities of the device, browsing the Web (with a minor gaffe as a Flash plugin apparently failed to load), manipulating photos, playing music, videos and games, and reading e-books. “In order to really create a new category of devices, those devices are going to have to be far better at doing some key tasks,” Jobs said. “Otherwise it has no reason for being.”

Apple also introduced an App Store-like marketplace for electronic books called iBookstore at the event, as well as a multi-touch enabled version of iWork that will be available from the App Store for $30, or users can buy the Pages, Keynote and Numbers separately for $9.99 each. The iPad runs all current apps, either iPhone-sized with a large black-border, or at a 2x up-res full screen. Apple also announced a new SDK allowing devs to easily design for the iPad.

The device is powered by Apple's first CPU, the 1 GHz A4. Apple had purchased PA Semiconductor, a manufacturer known for making power-efficient processors, back in 2008. According to Apple, this SoC (system-on-a-chip) allows the iPad to play back HD video for 10 hours before requiring a full battery charge.

Gizmodo, among other websites, already have their hands on the iPad and are putting it through its paces. Mark Wilson, Gizmodo's reviewer, says the device is extremely fast and has a solid feel. The size and resolution of the screen also won kudos. The device apparently runs a slightly modified version of the current iPhone 3 OS, which ought to be released with the iPad as iPhone OS 3.2 (rather than iPhone 4 as some rumors had held).

ModMyi.com also has an iPad Forums section live now.

Why do people who hate Apple so much own an iPhone?
I don't get the hate either. I am all with you on the business aspect. I am stoked! This is going to be great for invoicing, databasing, etc.

[QUOTE='iPhone3G[S];5103600']Just like yelling bomb on a plane, you have to have some censorship or there will be problems.

Sorry, I disagree, one thing is a bomb on a plane, another thing is a healthy discussion of Ideas and what you think is better or not... and even I disagree with you, I can say it in a polite and constructive way, which is the idea of a Forum, beside, the ideas are based on the IPAD, not on religious, racial or sexual content, he said thinks about the IPAD and now is being offering a ticket with no return of the forum...

Going back to the theme, yes, I will like to test it and see how it works, I think will be a great option if you are a business man, using the blackberry or iphone, can be hard, because of the size... this one is big and the kboard inside looks great, beside you can use a bluetooth kboard, which is great, i think is a great solution for roadwarriors specially if you have an airport extreme and you have your personal HDD at home...

its a nice toy and if you have the money to burn its ok to get.... i can think of situations where i dont want to take or pullout my macbook pro and when my iphone screen seems just too small that this would be handy/ usefull... its just not a smart buy in these economical times. especially if you have a mbp and iphone 3gs already.

I feel you guys, big letdown today for me too. The only thing I can see this iPad good for is movies and being able to stream them from my home server. A nice screen and size, plus battery life would make it perfect for that. My iPhone can do the rest and more.

God I hope they get their **** together for the next iPhone.

I think that this actually seems like a nice device... I can't afford a new macbook, so this is a nice way to get (sort of) an entry level mac at a low price. Sure it doesn't run Mac OS, but I'd much rather browse the internet in comfort with a lightweight, thin, tablet instead than having my macbook nearly light my lap on fire :P

It also looks like a great gaming device considering how there is more screen real-estate. That also goes for browsing the web, the reason why my iPhone always felt like it was lacking was because of how everything was crammed in there, and you were constantly scrolling webpages.

A thing I am dissapointed about is the processor though... 1GHz? C'mon Apple, that's barely more power than a 3Gs or a 3rd Gen iPod Touch.

So, AT&T ******* about how us iPhone users are putting a strain on their network, then they agree to host another data thirsty device...

They better get those network updates done faster.

The premiere versions have no ability to multi-task. Could this be something that is incorporated down the road with an OS update?

This thing is not that bad Ok! It is a big iTouch but is cool for people that love to read and listen to music or watch movies on the go. Because I hate reading on my iPhone as an eReader and if you're a college student you can get all your School Book's digital. I think is cool for some folk's, is not for every body this thing is more for people like my wife or my sister the love to read and get there news paper. If you don't like it walk away.

I'm actually not too disappointed. I wasn't expecting much more than the iPod Touch or iPhone offers.

Having a larger keyboard to type on is great, fat fingers and the little iPhone screen = fail. iWork is a huge plus for me, without that I would have zero interest in this tablet. The price points are also substantially lower than I was expecting which is great news.

Biggest issue is the name, what a horrible name, someone should be fired for throwing iPad in the hat.
