  • iPad: 1 GHz CPU, 9.7" Screen, WiFi. Starting at $499.

Apple introduced its latest device to the world at an event in San Francisco today: the iPad. Saying that it fit into the space between the iPhone and the MacBook, company CEO Steve Jobs praised the new device as Apple's "most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price.” The lowest-end model will retail for $499 US, and a fully-loaded 64GB iPad with 3G connectivity will sell for $829. The iPad will start shipping to customers in April, with 3G models coming a month after that.

The iPad is a half-inch (1.25 cm) thick, weighs 1.5 pounds (688 g) and has a 9.7-inch IPS touch screen with a 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch. It comes in three models: 16, 32 and 64 GB, with and without 3G; all models have WiFi and Bluetooth wireless. The battery lasts for 10 hours, and according to Apple, the iPad can remain on standby for a month without needing a charge. It comes with a standard 30-pin iPod/iPhone dock connector and can output HD video at 576x480 pixels, progressive or interlaced, with the optional Apple Composite A/V Cable.

“It’s so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone,” Jobs said of the iPad, sitting on a couch as he demoed its features. He showed the different capabilities of the device, browsing the Web (with a minor gaffe as a Flash plugin apparently failed to load), manipulating photos, playing music, videos and games, and reading e-books. “In order to really create a new category of devices, those devices are going to have to be far better at doing some key tasks,” Jobs said. “Otherwise it has no reason for being.”

Apple also introduced an App Store-like marketplace for electronic books called iBookstore at the event, as well as a multi-touch enabled version of iWork that will be available from the App Store for $30, or users can buy the Pages, Keynote and Numbers separately for $9.99 each. The iPad runs all current apps, either iPhone-sized with a large black-border, or at a 2x up-res full screen. Apple also announced a new SDK allowing devs to easily design for the iPad.

The device is powered by Apple's first CPU, the 1 GHz A4. Apple had purchased PA Semiconductor, a manufacturer known for making power-efficient processors, back in 2008. According to Apple, this SoC (system-on-a-chip) allows the iPad to play back HD video for 10 hours before requiring a full battery charge.

Gizmodo, among other websites, already have their hands on the iPad and are putting it through its paces. Mark Wilson, Gizmodo's reviewer, says the device is extremely fast and has a solid feel. The size and resolution of the screen also won kudos. The device apparently runs a slightly modified version of the current iPhone 3 OS, which ought to be released with the iPad as iPhone OS 3.2 (rather than iPhone 4 as some rumors had held).

ModMyi.com also has an iPad Forums section live now.

I don't know about everyone else but I think that it is really cool and if I wasn't planning on going traveling I would be buying one right away. For sure when I get back.

for me it does not live up to the apple standarts i know and has many flaws.
i'll stick to my iPhone for now. will buy the new one in june

oh, and whats with that HUGE margin/black space between screen and bezel? plain ugly.

it wouldn't be so small if it ran on osx though. they would have had to use other hardware to make sure that it would work properly. at least I think that they would.

But I don't dismiss the fact that there are a lot of people that don't want to use AT&T or just want to use it as a music device. That doesn't make them morons for wanting an iPod. The fact is for my business the iPad will be extremely helpful and I will be buying one for every sales person in my company. Being able to show a customer a portfolio of work on a beautiful touchscreen and also to be able to type notes for the potential customer would be awesome.

It's a tool to make my company more productive. A lot of people who are complaining are broke high school and college students. I understand their point of view, I have been there before. While everyone thinks Apple is a stupid company that put out a piece of garbage, I assure you that they spent tons of money researching if it would be a success with their demographic. This is not a replacement for a laptop, it serves a different purpose.
Are you currently using a tablet for your "bussiness". Are you getting the iPad to replace this tablet?

I think that the iPad is a pointless device. It doesnt have the convenience of a smart-phone's size (or even capabilities=making calls) or the potential of a full fledged laptop!!

However, apple would have never released it if they didnt realize the popularity and money this thing would achieve.
Really wanna see how it goes after the iPad is released!

The price is toooooo high, but it would be the best value on earth, if it was OSX. And what is with the name? Apple is going to loose a massive amount of money on this. The video at the end of this is awesome. The Mad TV skit at the end is really funny. I wonder if they can sue Apple for stealing their name.

I'd suggest y'all go to Axiotron Auto Forward and see what you think? I know it cost more than iPad or should I say "Oversized iPod Touch... If I have enough money, I would probably buy the ModBook Pro. You can check that out at Axiotron : Modbook Pro. You can even send your original MacBook Pro (13.3 or whatever size) to them so they can mod it for you. Right now the ModBook Pro is still in development and should be ready Q2 of 2010.

os 4.0 will only come out when the 4th gen iPhone is released (if you didn't notice the big updates only come out with the new iPhones ) why do you need the 3g version of the iPad? just use mywi from the rockap...

Apple Working on XL Tablets Running Full Mac OS X

This one caught us by surprise, but it comes from a source that has always been 100% reliable: Not only Apple may be working on a 10-inch tablet, but also in 13" and 15" models, one running Mac OS X.

This source claims that the two touchscreen prototypes—made of aluminum, but on the shape of big iPhones—were in a factory in Shenzuen, China. One of them "was running Mac OS X 10.5." When I asked, the source didn't know if these were built for demonstration purposes, or if they were preproduction units. The company has a tight relation with Apple but "it's not FoxConn."

As I said before, with everyone focused on the 10-inch tablet with iPhone OS, this sighting is quite surprising. It is possible that Apple may be just exploring other form factors, and these two models may or may not end being future products.
