iOS comes with a useful feature called “Auto Lock” that will let your device’s display automatically lock after a set time period. The display will also dim before the device locks to help save battery life if you end up leaving it somewhere, such as on a table when you walk into another room.
If you like the dim feature, but don’t want to deal with the auto-locking feature due to having a passcode or some other complication that makes it a total pain to constantly unlock your device, you may want to check out a new free jailbreak tweak called AutoDimWithoutLock
by iOS developer Elijah Frederickson.
With this tweak, you will be able to have the device display dim after a set time period, but without having the device lock up on you. So basically, you’ll be able to let the device enter a lower power state and you can get right back to using it whenever you’re ready without any complications delaying your use.
AutoDimWithoutLock will also offer you a nice visual effect on the home screen. If you end up leaving your iOS device sitting on the home screen, then not only will the device's back light dim, but the application icons will disappear making it so that only your wallpaper shows. If you have a very nice wallpaper, you might be able to get some nice use out of this feature.
The tweak adds a preferences pane to the Settings application where you can configure its various options:
For one, you can enable or disable the tweak on demand. You will also find the ability to enable or disable the tweak when your device is connected to a power source, choose the applications that you want to disable the tweak in if you happen to have those applications open, enable or disable hiding application icons on the home screen when the back light dims, and choose the dim delay in seconds.
AutoDimWithoutLock seems to be a very cool jailbreak tweak. If you would like to give it a shot, it’s available for free in Cydia’s BigBoss repository.
