  • comScore: iPhone Claimed 40% Share of U.S. Smartphone Market in July

On the heels of a new report today from Quantcast and investment firm Piper Jaffray showing that iOS now claims a 65 percent U.S. mobile browsing market share, comScore is piling on the good news for Apple with a report of its own.

On Friday, comScore released data from the comScore MobiLens and Mobile Metrix, reporting key trends in the U.S. smartphone industry for July 2013.

For the period surveyed, Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with a 51.8 percent market share, followed by Apple with 40.4 percent (up 1.2 percentage points). The latest data continues to point to a consistent market share in the U.S. for Android while Apple's share climbs a little bit more with each new report.

For all other players in the smartphone arena, the news is less than hopeful. In terms of smartphone platform share, BlackBerry is holding fast to just 4.3 percent of the market, while Microsoft has 3 percent. Symbian rounded out the bottom with 0.3 percent.

Overall, 143.3 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (60 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in July, up 3 percent since April's comScore report.
