  • No Daylight Savings Fix This Year?

An iOS 4.1 bug that causes alarms to be one hour off after the "Summer" or "Daylight Savings" time switch hit European users this weekend. The same bug affected New Zealand and Australian iOS users last month, as those countries went on Daylight Savings for the austral summer. At the time, Apple Australia indicated that the bug fix would be released soon, but it appears that we'll be waiting for iOS 4.2 in November... after the entire world has changed its clocks.

Specifically, the bug affects alarms set using the iOS 4.1 Clock app: recurring alarms set to repeat for anything other than "every day" will fail to make the shift between summer and regular time. For New Zealand (which made the shift to Daylight Savings Time on September 27) and most of Australia (which followed on October 3), this was a nuisance for people who use their iDevices as alarm clocks, as they were awakened an hour early. For users in the Northern Hemisphere, whose clocks "Fall back" in autumn, this means that alarms will be an hour late, which is potentially a more serious problem.

Apple has indicated that it's aware of the problem and has a fix in the queue, but it's surprising that they chose not to get the patch out for the millions of iPhone users in Europe, and it'll even more surprising if they are waiting until after the many more millions of US users set their clocks back. It's still possible that we'll see an interim release to fix the alarm bug and the lockscreen issue this week, but anyone in the US who relies on their iPhone to wake them up should have a backup in place next Monday.

Man this hit me this morning. I had my iphone set for 0430 and it didn't go off. I'm attending SLC which is a leadership school for the US Army and if I would've overslept due to this, that would've been my @$$. Luckily, I need 3 alarm clocks and set my rooms clock radio as well. LMAO that's messed up you had to bike an extra 10 miles for that. You know your supervisor wouldn't believe you had you told them it was an iphone bug.

My alarm is currently working. So not sure if rebooting it tons of times did it or setting time to manual or resetting my network settings or deleting my alarms. Just happy it's working but setting one up for an hour ahead jaut in case.

Is this happening on jailbroken iPhones as well as unjailbroken iPhones? I have an iPhone 4 which I have jailbroken with a custom 4.1 software made with Pwnage Tool and my alarm is not having any problems at all but my wife has an iPhone 3G with 4.1 which is not jailbroken and her alarm has sounded one hour early since the time went back one hour.

I will jailbreak my wife's iPhone 3G later today to see if it fixes the issue.

Is there a pattern to this?

I don't use my alarm so haven't experienced the problem but a colleague has two iPhone 4s bought at the same time, one for him and one for his wife. His phone has the problem and his wife's does not.

I've just set an alarm on mine and it went off OK. Does this only affect alarms set before the clocks changed? What about people in the USA - why are they being affected?

Does anyone know who is being affected and why?

It would appear that this happens to Alarms that are set using the reaccuring alarm.

If you set ( or i set ) my phone's alarm for one day, at one time it works fine.

If i set an alarm to go off every day at the same time, its ok.

If i set an alarm to go off at the same time recuring every mon, tues, wed for example ( not every day but more than once ) the alarm will fail...

      HTH

Hopefully my little world won't come crashing down this Sunday!
I'm not using any recurring alarms on my phone though.
My pc's and self-setting clock radio did set back an hour the other day.

Really? Is this really that big an issue? Maybe you should pay attention on the TWO out of 365 days in the year if your clock is right. Don't always blindly rely on technology, as it's simply not that perfect. This shouldn't even be worthy of a separate article in the forums and blogs that talk about this type of triviality. Let's see how many whiny Americans and Canadians there will be this weekend.
