  • Germany Gets Unlocked iPhones with No Contract

It's unlikely that many die-hard Apple fans will relocate to Germany on account of this... but some may consider it. Germany, it seems, is the place to be to effortlessly get your hands on a new iPhone 4 (or iPhone 3GS ) that's unlocked and without a contract. As of today, German iPhone customers have what many in the US have been clamoring for - the loss of carrier exclusivity and the arrival of unlocked iPhones readily available for purchase.

In Germany, however, it is T-Mobile that is losing its exclusivity as O2 and Vodafone will now join the party and cater to current or prospective iPhone owners. The German version of Apple's online store now reflects the change and spotlights unlocked, no-strings attached iPhones (3GS and iPhone 4). According to Apple, the iPhone will work with "the wireless carrier of your choice."

Although reports and rumors have lingered about carrier expansion in the US since AT&T was first announced as the exclusive carrier of the iPhone, there is still no concrete evidence to suggest the situation will change any time soon in the coming months. The appetite, however, for carrier expansion has never been greater. And for some, that strong demand is all the evidence they need to believe that carrier expansion will eventually happen.

The 32 Euro thing is the following:
You buy a contract with T-mobile, or any other carrier in Germany, and you can (also) buy an unlocked iphone 4. It will cost you 32 Euro a month for 24 months. you do the math.
If you purchase the O2 iphone with the O2 data plan, you get a whopping 320 MB download at full speed, and then after that, slowed down. I asked the guy who the heck uses only 320MB a month? Are you guys friggin high?
He promptly went into the party line that most users never come close to that. I told him that number is nowhere near reality. I sign the contract tomorrow, because it IS data flat rate. Now we just need the JB for 4.1 .....

unlocked iphone 4 anyone? now i have 2!
Ah, last time I checked there was a JB for 4.1, its called Limera1n or greenposi0n.

Isn't it cool how iphone owners all over the world share the same feelings regarding an unlocked iphone. With the various amounts of money paid for an iphone it should be factory unlocked and this makes no sense being carrier locked. Thanks Dev Team for being able to unlock an iphone!

T-Mobile has the fastest 3G, just a quick fun fact. They DO have 3G you know. Not everyone on T-Mobile is stuck using EDGE because they have an unlocked iPhone.

That's because uk is the best

Israel too, you buy it from any network but with contract for 18 months, and then you pay ~25$ and unlock it
I pay every month ~$60 for the price of the iphone, 3000 minutes to the network numbers i am with, 200 minutes to every network in Israel or Palestine, 200 sms, 2 GB of High Speed GSM connection which is really fast. and great coverage, not so good in the Palestinian Authorities though

The iPhone doesn't connect to t mobiles 3G. The Iphone does 3g at 1900 mhz,* Tmobile uses 1700 and 2100, at the same time. The Iphone is not able to do 3g on T-mobile.
It would be like trying to listen to AM radio with and FM only radio.

      629€/739€ = $872.74/$1,025.36

Why does it cost so much more in Europe than the US? An iPhone 4 with no contract costs $599/$699.

I know they have insane taxes over there... It just seems like maybe companies are taking advantage of "exchange ignorance."

It's like when you buy a magazine:
      USA $4.99
      CAN $8.99

Meanwhile the actual exchange value is:
      1 USD is 1.02 CAD
      Or
      $4.99 US to $5.11 CAD

That's a baseless profit of $3.88 CAD, or $3.79 USD.

      Multinational corporations rule!
      NOT!

Apple either marks them up and makes more profit on export the apple products or they don't sell them there at all an us Americans unlock them and mark them up and export them via eBay. That second option is great for me.

      Check your facts:

AT&T has the fastest 3G (proven by the fact that I can put a call on speaker and update apps at the same time,) but their coverage with it blows!

This article (which did not load on my phone, because major sites are OBSESSED with loading "mobile" versions that usually FAIL) http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,2806,2364549,00.asp

Was linked to, by this one (which DID load properly on the phone) http://www.maclife.com/article/news/...as_fastest_3g#

AT&T is only topped by 4G service, which is provided by sprint. That is, until they (AT&T) release HSPA+ anyway. Don't get too excited, because it'll probably take 20 years to get that everywhere with AT&T's ridiculously slow upgrade plans.

Ok people we all know what countries have unlocked iPhones to start. This was just giving the news that there is one more to add to the list. People always yell about MMi posting rumors and when we post news people just say "big deal we have that here". So this is still news to some and intersting because it just opens up more sales for factory unlocked phones.

Won't happen. It is one of the rules of the internet. You have to read things you don't like and then bash it; you can't just pass up articles.

Another rule of internet: bump up your salary 10x.

Good thing I don't have any power or disrespectful people would get infractions/suspended/banned.
      I can't stand those people.
