  • CBS News: Which iPhone Sleep Apps Actually Work?

Let's face it. We could all use a better night's sleep. But for many of us, winning the lottery seems more likely than getting a full and rejuvenative 8 hours of shut-eye.

Today, the CDC defines sleep deprivation as an epidemic that affects as many as 70 million Americans. But a new CBS News report this week is reminding us that the solution for our sleeplessness may be as simple as an App Store download.

Dr. Michael Breus, a psychologist and a specialist in sleep medicine, cited Jawbone Up and Sleep Genius as two critical resources for the sleep deprived. While not a sleep-inducing app, Jawbone Up is a wristband and app that tracks how you sleep, move and eat. It then helps users capitalize on that information to feel their best.

Sleep Genius, on the other hand, is a neuroscience- based sleep app that ModMyi first reported about prior to the national acclaim it has recently received in response to its effectiveness and superiority to the largely ineffectual white noise-based apps that populate the App Store.

According to Dr. Breus, there are several different app and product categories to consider when trying to find the best non-medicinal technology to solve your sleep deprivation. Dr. Breus highlighted some of these categories during his fascinating segment on CBS This Morning, which is now available to watch online here.

I use Sleep Genius, it works very well for me. I've noticed that I fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer than when I don't use.

Sleep genius seems to work for me too. I wish there was some way to automate it so it would come on automatically though cause I don't always remember to use it.

I haven't tried this one yet but generally anything with white noise (or similar) helps me sleep.

One problem is people use computers late at night which puts out a blue light, so mimics sun light affect on producing sleep hormones.

If you use computer at night i suggest get f.lux a free app

I want to try one of these apps but how does it work when sleeping in the same bed as your spouse? Can the app differentiate between you rolling around vs your spouse?

Not sure about the Jabra thing but Sleep Genius is just music that plays. The music, though, has sounds that help trigger relaxation and then deep sleep. The 'alarm' function is really not even an alarm. It's a very soft beeping noise that plays below the volume of the music. That's why I still have to set a regular alarm cuz I don't hear the app's alarm!

I will say, it does help you feel refreshed when you wake up!

I must say, really wanted to come in here and talk about what a crock of shit these type of apps are. I really did but I used it for the first time last night and I have to say, I slept soundlhy and woke up feeling very refreshed. I didn't even wake up in the middle of the night like I normally do. I had very realistic, vivid dreams too. I'm very skeptical of such things so I don't think I'm experiencing a placebo effect. I'm going to use this for a while and see if I continue to sleep well with it. The alarm feature is nice too. It woke me up very slowly, not suddenly like a typical alarm clock. I set the sleep sounds to turn off after 2.5 hours and then turn on a gain at 6 AM to wake me.
