  • Apple's iOS Platform Gains on Android and iPhone Builds on U.S. Smartphone Lead

According to the latest U.S. smartphone user report from research firm comScore, Apple saw quarterly subscriber gains in June as iOS slowly crept up on Android, which held stable with over half of the market. On the heels of IDC’s look at the worldwide smartphone market, comScore issued the latest findings from its MobiLens service for the second quarter of 2013.

The results point toward Apple leading the U.S. market with a 39.9% share at the end of June, a positive 0.9% change from the first three months of the year. Samsung also boosted its piece of the pie by 2%, ending the second quarter with 23.7% of the market.

As per the usual, Apple and Samsung’s gains were at the expense of the other top five manufacturers with HTC in third place holding 8.5% of the market, Motorola in fourth place with 7.2% and LG in fifth place at 6.6%. Each of the bottom three lost market share equating to 0.5%, 1.3% and 0.2% respectively.

In terms of the operating system market share, Android dominated with 52% of the market but the OS exhibited no growth quarter to quarter. Apple’s iOS came in second with a 39.9% share up 0.9% from last quarter. BlackBerry took 4.4% of the market, down 0.8% from the March quarter, while Microsoft Windows Phone moved up slightly from 3% to 3.1%. Symbian continued to fall, losing 0.2% quarter-to-quarter to finish with 0.3% of the market.

At the end of the June quarter, almost 142 million people in the U.S. owned a smartphone – a number which is up by 4% since March. According to comScore, smartphones now account for 59% of the mobile market.

      Why Android devices suck

      1.lag
      2. not all apps are compatible with all Android devices.
      3. most Android phones have pointless and stupid features.
      4. ugly UI
      5. The software you get with the phone you usually stay with. Its very hard to update the software of a Android phone.

      6. most Android phones are made out of cheap hard plastic which makes it a #$%$ phone

Example: dragging a video from the internet to the home screen is a perfect example of a pointless and stupid feature

      7. They don't have a big selection of apps.
      8. unpatched vulnerabilities (security risk)

Ugly UI? To be honest, iOS 7 looks a lot worse than the UI of Jellybean or whatever the most recent OS is.

      1. invalid point, I don't experience lag
      2. once again invalid point, don't have any issues on that end either
      3. says the guy whom owns a Apple device that is known to copy android features
      4. I think we all agree iOS 7 looks like something out of a cartoon with it's ugly cartoonish and colorful look.
      5. Oh you mean fragmentation, kind of like how Apple doesn't update certain devices of theirs each year to force you to upgrade
      6. You mean most Android phones are made of better hardware than Apple seeing as Apple is trying so hard to catch up with their minimal upgraded phones each year?

Thank u!!! Finally I'm not alone, even on galaxy S4 the system itself looks like it lags, iOS is soo much smoother, no comparison

I moved from iPhone 5 to galaxy s4 and it was the worst thing I've ever done. Gives us all these "cool" (useless) feature that take up all the ram and CPU power and leave u with none to work with. The whole smart pause feature is crap coz it pauses every couple of seconds even when u still are staring at the screen. I'm even afraid to blink incase it pauses. The same thing with smart scroll it just moved the page even when your head is still. And for the whole hover your hand or finger above the screen thing it doesn't recognize your movement sometimes and by the time it does you are better off pressing the button coz it makes more sense and is quicker.

I dont get why on every topic comment section became an android vs ios battleground? I own both iphone and htc one and with my 100% consciousness i can tell ios is better than android..
I wont give up my 1gb ram iphone5 for samsung s4 with 2gb ram (as stated in specs) iphone dont need a 2gb of ram and a quadcore processor it runs smoother than devices running on android also higher hardware spec requires higher power
In short if you need a smartphone use iphone if you a want huge number of specs then stare at the samsung s4 box and throw the phone, trust me you dont need it

Apple is still behind the curve when it comes to mobile phone technology and specifications.

Yeah only in written specification, the question is do you have any idea how the high-end hardware build helped you with your everyday needs of a smartphone?.. If i agreed with you, why professionals uses apple devices like military, medical experts, politicians, engineers etc..? Can you give me a valid reason? Ive never seen a doctor holding a samsung tablet

When the iPhone was first released I couldn't see what the fuss was about, it did absolutely nothing that my windows mobile phone hasn't been doing for years.

Then I saw an iPhone and realized that specs aren't everything, it's how it's implemented that counts.

I recently tried a Nexus 4 and after a few weeks I gave up. For me Android was just so much worse than iOS that I gave up, despite being determined to hang on at least until the next iPhone was released I just couldn't do it and have ended up getting an iPhone 5

You might be willing to put up with Android but I really couldn't.

Luckily we are not all the same otherwise there would be no competition and no innovation.

This survey and conclusions are stunningly at odds with the survey reported on El Reg today. There are lies, damn lies and statistics. You can read whatever you want into these surveys they all show what they want to show.

Okay, I'm going to have to butt in here and stop you right there because, as a beta user of it, iOS 7 looks ******* badass as hell. Everything on it looks better.

      - APPLE WINS - 8.7.2013; Apple's iOS Platform Gains on Android and iPhone Builds on U.S. Smartphone Lead

      - APPLE LOSES - 8.7.2013; iPhone Just 13% of Smartphones Shipped Globally in Q2
THESE TWO ARE BASICALLY THE SAME INFO
      - APPLE LOSES - 8.2.2013; Android Obliterates iOS with 80% of All Q2 Global Smartphone Shipments

      - APPLE WINS - 7.29.2013; Kantar: iPhone Share Outpacing Android in US, U.K., France

      - APPLE LOSES - 7.26.2013; iPhone Sees Less Shipments in the Wake of a Growing Smartphone Market

The icons look like they were done in about 5 minutes. So I'd have to disagree.
