  • Android Finally Gets Find My iPhone Like Feature

As both Apple and Google continue to compete against one another, Google’s Android platform seems to be catching up to Apple’s iOS platform in at least one aspect. Android devices will soon be able to track the location of their phone much in the same way that iPhone owners have been able to do since 2010.

The Android team recently revealed in a blog post that the new Android Device Manager (ADM) feature will roll out later this month for devices running Android 2.2 Froyo or later. This covers all but 1.3% of Android devices according to Google’s figures. The new feature will allow device owners to ring a phone at maximum volume in order to find it, even if it has been silenced. Users can also locate a device on a map with real-time location data. If the phone can’t be recovered, ADM also allows for the secure erasure of all the data on a device.

As a result of ADM, Google seems to have become a latecomer to the phone location and remote interaction game. Apple and Microsoft have had a “find my phone” feature built into their mobile platforms since 2010. Apple has spent the three years since introducing Find My iPhone steadily improving the feature. In December, the iPhone maker added driving directions to the app and the iOS 7 beta includes both a password disabling feature that locks a device out of a user’s iTunes account and an activation lock feature that shuts a phone down entirely.

Other Android device manufacturers have already stepped in where Google hadn’t. Sony for instance, Sony’s my Xperia security service for its Android-powered Xperia line. This feature allows users to sound alarms wake a device’s display, lock a phone, or remotely erase data if necessary.

We’ll have to see if the move helps Android gain an edge over the iOS platform in the ongoing mobile wars.

So with all these boasted specs I was looking forward to seeing what it could do. As a person who used both android and iOS regularly the biggest flaw with an S4 IMO is that it runs android. It's hard to explain but android just doesn't feel as polished and smooth as iOS does. Touching an icon feels delayed in it opening. Scrolling feels stiff. Gallery is just awful performance wise, takes forever to load things and reacts very slowly (thank goodness for quick pic in google play store). I've had the s4 for about 2 weeks now and it has inexplicably rebooted itself 3 times and frozen to the point where I have to hard reboot it twice. I can't remember the last time I had to reboot my iPhone 5. If I could run iOS on that hardware I would be in heaven.
Oh, and came across an opportunity to use NFC like Samsung touts in their little commercial. Not as easy as just touching another android (was a s3 to my S4 in this case). Ended up just bluetoothing the pic over because trying to "bump" it over proved to be a not so user friendly task.
With all that being said from androids negatives come its positives in that most issues I have with androids core features can be modded or outright replaced by another app, the choice of customizations is really great IMO. iOS lacks this choice, it does a lot of things a hell of a lot better than android does but if something doesn't work right or just doesn't appeal to someone that same level of choice isn't there, at least not with a stock iPhone. Jail broken iPhone and sky is the limit just as much as android.
If you don't mind a little work, why don't you try flashing the Google Play Edition ROM on your phone? I'm sure your problems are coming from TouchWiz. I've had a Nexus 4 for about 5 months now and I've never had a random reboot and it's never frozen up on me.

I think you may be right. I had a Nexus 4 for the last 6 months before I got an S4. Didn't experience these same issues (not that the experience was perfect but what is). Could also be the memory card causing slowdown, Nexus 4 doesnt have that option so couldn't test that. I do have the S4 rooted, maybe I will give Google Play Rom a try. I had latest Cyanogen mod on my Nexus before I sold it, did like that. Only thing I would miss is that I do like some of Samsung's additions, all the eye tracking stuff is pretty cool (although not necessary) and the travel LS that comes pre-installed is really nice, does the google play edition have the same lockscreen?

Why don't show a little respect for peoples opinions and experiences instead of bashing/insulting them. With that being said? Go troll somewhere else and getting a life!

Why are you here then? Just to point out people's mistakes being rude or are you actually going to post something that's on topic?

My friend has a GS4 and while he was still running stock (TouchWiz) he said storing media on his SD card was causing pretty major battery drain. If you're storing apps on it, I'm sure it would be even worse.

Yeah, you'll lose all of the features you get with TouchWiz but the storage and performance you gain might be worth it. My friend refused to get rid of TouchWiz for a while because of all the features he'd lose but just recently did for battery life improvements and he said it was worth it.

The GPE lock screen isn't the same but you do get the smart cover screen feature if you have a cover. What do you want from the lock screen though?

The lockscreen that is installed by default, says "Life companion" on it, the wallpaper changes automatically every so often, some really nice walls in that pack. Found one ROM I may like, Crash rom, has stock feel with some nice add ons and bloatware removed. Will see how this runs on the S4.

Ah okay. I didn't know it did that. There was an app I downloaded on my old Touchpad that changed the wallpaper to random pictures every hour or so. I thought it was neat but after a while I wanted to stick to just one. There might be an app that does it on Android as well but for just the lock screen. I really don't know.

Good luck with the ROM though.

Oh, I'm sure there are tons of live wallpapers that can serve the same purpose. I just really liked the ones Samsung bundled with this one, looks amazing on the big screen.
