Google Play Chasing Apple App Store with 50B App Downloads
Almost two months after Apple touted its milestone of logging 50 billion app downloads from the Apple App Store, Google's app storefront - Google Play - can now boast of the same feat.
“Apps have revolutionized the way we play video games, consume news, do business, education, communicate, create art, and so much more,” Apple said in May, touting its accomplishment as a practically untouchable achievement.
But Android is nipping at Apple's heels with the tremendous growth of the Google Play store in the last year. When you consider Android’s challenge of playing catch-up to the App Store, it's all the more impressive that Google Play downloads have now surpassed 50 billion too.
Unfortunately for Apple loyalists, it doesn't appear that Google Play's momentum will slow any time soon, especially with the record influx of Android apps hitting the store and the equally monumental paydays some Android developers have been receiving. Google CEO Larry Page confirmed Thursday, for example, that more money was paid out to app developers in the first half of 2013 than during all of 2012.
