  • VLC for iOS Now Officially Available in the U.S. App Store

The highly anticipated VLC media player application for iOS has finally returned to the App Store Thursday night after being absent for a few years because of issues with copyright and App Store terms and conditions. The issues that had the application removed from the App Store in the first place are no longer present in this version of the application, and it's free and open source.

VLC for iOS gives users a way to play all kinds of media file types from their iOS devices, which are otherwise unsupported by the factory software. The application includes several useful features such as the ability to upload media files to VLC for iOS through a Web browser on a computer, Dropbox integration, the ability to download videos from the Internet, video editing, and much more.

The latest version of the application, version 2.0, can be downloaded from the App Store for free via this App Store link and it is compatible with any iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5.1 or later. Grab it while it's hot!

Apparently, it's still not available in the US store.

Tried the free version and it won't connect to PC even with the helper installed. No it's not the firewall and it won't manually connect either. Oh well glad I didn't buy it

There isn't a "paid" version at all. There is only a free one. I think you were trying to download the wrong one. Here's the Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vlc-...650377962?mt=8

Glad to have VLC back in the app store, but I was sad to see zero support for AC3 audio. It played my MKV files like a champ, minus the audio. Oh well, can't win them all.

correct. not available in Canadian store. god damn licencing prevents most Canadian content across many platforms including tv, radio, etc.
I logged in my VPN ( so I can use American Netflix) and it allowed me to download the app. anyway hope this helps for Canadians trying to get this app.

      Sheesh.
VLC has always been open source and free. The license was pure GPL2, which does not permit any further restrictions on the distribution of a program. The Apple store is all about restrictions.
Somehow, this got dual licensed under the MPL (the Mozilla Public License), which is more forgiving.

Still, it's very limited. Doesn't understand Microsoft streams, which is a pity, because radio stations often use .asx style streams. VLC on Linux or Windows does understand these, which means it was deliberately left out. Also doesn't handle AVCHD files that work OK elsewhere in IOS.
