  • Greenpois0n To Be Released This Sunday!

That's right! The developers behind the newest jailbreak, greenpois0n, have informed the world of it's estimated arrival date of October 10th, 2010.

Developer Joshua Hill, aka p0sixninja, recently tweeted "Things have progressed to the point where we don't expect anymore roadblocks. ETA for greenpois0n is 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM".

While it's important to remember that this is only an estimated release date and our friend chpwn puts it into decent perspective "Please note that an ETA is, by definition, an estimate. There may still be delays, although we will try for there not to be any." Chpwn has been working with Saurik on improving Cydia, but by the sounds of it, it will not be ready to be released alongside the greenpois0n release, but it will be something else to look forward to after jailbreaking.

It will be important to watch out for fakes in the meantime, and make sure that you follow us here for the release. The servers will more than likely take a huge hit, and hopefully we can arrange something like we did with jailbreakme.com to act as a mirror. Keep your eyes peeled.

While it is not confirmed yet, we are hoping to see an untethered jailbreak for every iDevice currently available, however don't be disappointed if its not yet untethered.

Get your iPods, iPhones, iPads and AppleTV ready for this sundays "funday".

    Sunday - greenpois0n - Be there. 10/10/10 10:10:10AM GMT

Edit Poseidon: This will only work on the iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 4G. It does /not/ support any older devices as they do not contain the A4 chip that contains the exploit.

Secondly this is not an unlock and will not help those that have updated to 4.0.2 or 4.1.

Why not unlock? Baseband is 1.59.00 which is unlockable. IP4 can upgrade to stock 4.1 with TSS server to preserve baseband.

I'm stoked to see that we will have the jailbreak. I hope this goes as planned. I just wish there were more people involved in the development and that is was something worked on more often. If I had the know how I would be all about it. well either way this is a step in the right direction.

In the early days of jailbreak yes, it was done for free, nobody owed anyone anything, etc etc etc. But at a certain point between then and now Saurik created an app store in Cydia. This is the turning point. He setup a system for 3rd parties to collect payment for applications. As soon as the first payment was made then it changed the game and yes, the community is owed a jailbreak. It is two sided, first the users that purchased apps on the jailbreak are owed a jailbreak so they can use that which they purchased. Second the developers are owed a jailbreak so that they can provide support for that which they sold. Think of it as if Apple disabled all app support on the iPhone. Every dev, every customer would be in an uproar and there would probably be lawsuits. It is the same here in that Saurik set up a system for commerce on the iPhone. There is now a responsibility to allow the support resulting from that to continue. The dev teams, while they themselves don't owe the community are the ones who have the knowledge to make that happen. But even if all the dev teams quit, there would still be a necessity to have the jailbreak. Not a want, but a necessity.

(FYI, I just joined in on this thread so I'm not defending any previous posts I have made as this is my first post on this thread. Just explaining why a jailbreak is owed to the community and explaining who ulitmately owes it/who is actually able to make it happen.)
Here is an analogy that may help you understand the issues here.
Say you buy a new car from the dealer.
It’s a fine car but you are an individual and would like to customize it to your liking and get some 17 inch rims and tires. The dealer says, sure no problem we’ll sell you anything you want. Unfortunately you don’t like the selection they have and want to get something else. The dealer (who has foreseen this) gets belligerent and says you are not allowed to do that for liability reasons and to prevent you from doing so he sold you the car equipped with wheel locks that you can’t remove. Now you are stuck.
But as you drive around suddenly you see a sign that says “We have the keys you need to remove the wheel locks your dealer has installed and the best is, they are absolutely free”. You just have to select the one that fits your car as these people have different kinds for different cars. So you unlock your wheels and now are free to look for any rims you want. You find a store that has many different rims, some for free, isn’t life grand, and some for money, but very, very cheap.
You decide to buy a set and install it yourself.
The manufacturer of those rims has two obligations, as he charged you money for the product, one to ensure that they will fit the vehicle they made them for and two to guarantee them from defect for a certain amount of time.
That’s it. You are happy with the rims, chicks dig you, life is beautiful.
But then the dealer introduces a new model that has a bigger engine and you buy it because your old ride is a bit slow and you feel it is crimping your style. You want to put those rims you bought on the new car however the car came with a different kind wheel lock that the old key doesn’t open.
The people who made the first key and gave it to you for free are under no obligation whatsoever to supply you with a new one. Beggars can’t be chooser, f. off. However you are free to make your own key if you are so inclined.
The manufacturer of the old rims is under no obligation to ensure that your old rims will fit the new car.
However the lucky SOB you are. the good peps who made your first key make another set and you get it, again, for free.
But now you have another problem because the manufacturer of the original rims you bought explicitly stated at the time of your purchase that you are not allowed to put those rims on any other car (f. you Rock) but you didn’t care because those rims were awesome.
Had you purchased a different set from another manufacturer you would have been able to put the rims on any car that they would fit (Cydia and Saurik), your new car, your squeeze’s car, the milkman’s car, etc..
Now the store you got those rims from no longer in business however you find the one that took over the merchandise.
This new store has no obligation to you to have any rims you want, to have an updated version of your old rim or even to do business with you.
Had you just kept your old car you could have driven it with the aftermarket rims until the end of time. But you felt that you needed to go with the times and wanted something new.
Therefore nobody is under any obligation to ensure that you can update this car the same way you updated the old.
Not the people who make the keys for the wheel lock, for free mind you you ungrateful *****, not the rim manufacturers and not the store that sells and, many times, gives away rims for free.

Sadsamurai, I was really compelled by your analogy to comment...it was pretty sweet lol. I'm not hating on anybody as they're entitled to their own opinions, but I enjoyed your car story

I'd guess it's due to GMT/Zulu time being the worldwide standard time when you are dealing with multiple time zones. For instance, all major airlines run on GMT/Zulu.

so 3gs and 3g owners are out of luck???

      we have been abandoned?

3G users are fine. They can always restore to 3.1.x no problem. The only problem is an unlock if they've ever gone up to stock 4.1.

3GS users who are on 4.0.2 or 4.1 with no SHSHs are pretty much out of luck right now.

Most people complaining are the ones that "accidentally" upgraded. I can't get over that phrase. I have too many friends that say that, and it really blows my mind that they didn't listen to me when I said over, and over, and over again.... NEVER UPGRADE UNTIL YOU KNOW IT'S SAFE.

I find it hard to believe that someone slipped, tripped, stumbled, fell, plugged their phone into iTunes, and hit the upgrade button.

For those who purchased a phone with 4.0.2-4.1 need not reply.

Forgot to mention the "my friend/ girl friend/ great grandma did it"...

Well, a huge lesson to be learned with this factor is also to back up your SHSHs asap. I'm more baffled at the people who have had their phone since 3.x, and go all the way to 4.x and not have a single SHSH on file. It's so very important to save them when you first get your phone that requires SHSHs to restore. Then the accidental upgrades can be reversed (not for unlocking purposes but for jb).
