  • Deus Ex: The Fall Doesn't Allow Users with Jailbroken Devices to Fire Any Weapons

Gamers who are looking to play the recently released first-person shooter, Deus Ex are in for a surprise if they downloaded the game on a jailbroken device. Its developer has made it so that copies of the game on a jailbroken device canít fully run. Many users are complaining that Square Enixís page doesnít warn users that they wonít be able to fully play the game on the devices if they are jailbroken, with the title being given a number of negative reviews pointing this fact out.

So what exactly makes the game unplayable? After the gameís initial cut scenes and a movement tutorial, jailbreakers will encounter a screen informing them they cannot fire their weapons since they are on jailbroken devices. What makes the situation a bit more frustrating to deal with is that jailbreaking is legal and although it may void a userís warranty, game and app publishers are wary of jailbroken machines since the process makes it possible to side-load pirated apps without paying for them.

One of the biggest reasons to play any games from the Deus Ex series is because of the flexibility in play style which is enabled by the gamesí design. It is conceivable that a player could stealthily move throughout the whole game without firing a single weapon but only if the player can make it past the first stage, which appears to require the use of at least one weapon. Itís quite unfortunate as Iím sure many of you were interested in trying the iOS game out.

Deus Ex: The Fall (iTunes Download Link)

If you non-jailbroken users are interested in playing the game, you can download Deus Ex: The Fall from the App Store for $7. It should be noted that youíll need 1.6 GB of space and an iPad 3 or above, iPad mini, iPhone 4S or above, or an iPod Touch 5 or above. Square Enix did note that support for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 are coming soon.

Just for the record, jailbreaking in and over it self does not void the warranty, confirmed by random 3 Apple store employees that I asked while waiting in an Apple store as I read this article. I also had no trouble making warranty claims on jailbroken devices before, either my own or on behalf of clients, as long as it's something well covered by the warranty, especially hardware/manufacturing related problems. Never had a problem.

Dues Ex developers are in their right to do this, they are just stupid to think it will deter anything. Although, it makes for some nice free PR!
This is why programs like xCon were created.

And how exactly would a wireless access-point/router be able to know if a connecting device is jail-broken/rooted? Also, what's to stop someone from using such a device via an ad-hoc wifi network on a laptop (or wifi card or usb dongle in a desktop) that's connected via a wired link?

In the UK the Sky Go App and Barclays Pingit App won't work on jailbroken devices.
I guess Sky do this to stop people who don't have a subscription, getting access to their service by some under hand methods.
Barclays doing it is fair enough, someone on a jailbroken device my be able to 'spoof' the App into making fraudulent payments?

That is the most stupidest thing I've heard. That way everyone who bought the game will get .50 off the purchase of their next Dues game and the lawyers make all the money.

Also pirating is not limited to jailbreak since last year. You can resign or use some chinese BS service to get cracked apps with no jailbreak at all
This is stupid if they think all JBers are pirates

      Square Enix apologises

We have not been clear in our communication earlier this week when we launched Deus Ex: The Fall. We did not state clearly that the game would not support jailbroken devices and so we will be switching this off via an update, so that all the supported iOS devices will be able to play the game in the near future.Ē

ďWe feel itís the right thing to do in this situation and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. No customer should be out of pocket when we were not clear from the start, so weíll get the game updated as soon as possible so that everyone who wants to play Deus Ex: The Fall can do regardless of whether their device is jailbroken or not. As soon as this update is live we will communicate this via the Eidos Montreal Community channels
