  • Joshua "p0sixninja" Hill's OpenJailbreak Site Goes Live

Towards the end of month in June popular iOS hacker, Joshua Hill, also known as p0sixninja, unveiled a new project he had been working on called “OpenJailbreak.” The project is an open source jailbreak repository that allows hackers and developers to work collectively on future jailbreak releases. Hill isn’t the only one working on the project either as there appears to be a whole team of people involved, including popular graphic designer Surenix, who also appears to be working on the website.

When taking a look at the site, many will think of a GitHub style page, with the main page showing the most recent projects added. Tapping the Projects link will show all the projects available. Here, users will find things such as “Libraries for manipulating Apple’s crash report files,” and many more. The site appears to be running on Redmine, which is a flexible project management web application developed originally by Jean-Philippe Lang. The application appears to have several features such as role based access control, a flexible issue tracking system, and support for multiple projects.

The project as a whole is set up to help foster collaboration between hackers and developers, which may ultimately help towards efficient research and fruition of future jailbreaks. As if this wasn’t enough, the site according to p0sixninja is “just a small part of an ultimate plan.” He hasn’t revealed what that means exactly but it definitely has many eagerly waiting to find out.

Good and all that the community can help but doesn't this mean apple has easy access to potential exploits hackers have discovered? Or are hackers looking for something else

Exactly. Just rename the site. Www.appledontlookhere.com. Good idea but something's are better left unsaid.

Why should they give up on an exploit just to jailbreak the 6.1.4 ? Heck no.

Yeah I don't really see this as a good thing.. since Apple will probably be monitoring that site like a hawk and patching things as they appear in the repository! .. The only way this could be acceptable to me is if he also found some kind of hardware exploit that makes it ok for Apple to watch it. I really don't get the point of this otherwise.

So p0sixninja can't produce a jailbreak by himself, so is hoping other people can create one for him, meanwhile the guys who have produced the current jailbreak and are hopefully working on the one for iOS 7.x can continue working in secret and produce the goods

How is this bigger than a jail break? Seems like a team of developers should be working like this, only not announcing it to the public.

When I first read the title I got excited and ran right to the site. 😕 Really thought it was the jail break website that was out before.

Open-source is a double-edged sword - I'm not sure how to feel about this. If it leads to a better jailbreak then I suppose it's a good thing? I trust p0sixninja implicitly, though.

Yeah pretty much. I don't get it either. Here have everyone help publicly. We must not be understanding this right.

Gotta agree, I don't get it. If this is what he meant by bigger than a jailbreak then I'm not seeing his reasoning there.

This should be password protected for jailbreakers only. Has to be a way to keep apple and others that don't belong having access to this out.

I'm with almost everyone else...are they hoping Apple will never go to the site and view the progress of a JB? Seems a bit odd, but maybe there's more to the story...

My Guess here is that if this is a part of his master plan.... he has to have found a way to exploit iOS that is not patchable.... I mean making the jailbreak open source sorta speak and giving Apple eyes in to what they are doing only leads me to believe the ace up his sleeve is not something that apple can stop easily or maybe impossible to do so....

Or it's a site created for misdirection toward Apple.

That would be wild and un patchable jailbreak exploit.
