  • Recently Surfaced Images and Video Claim to Show Apple's "iPhone Lite"

A slew of images and stylized videos hit the web recently, all of which are purporting to show a buttonless rear shell attached to a display assembly bound for Apple’s rumored low-cost “iPhone Lite.” According to a post on its blog, accessory reseller Techdy claims to have snagged a white copy of the iPhone rear’s shell, as well as the device’s accompanying 4-inch display, from up-chain supply sources in China.

Although the images and video purportedly show an “iPhone Lite,” the lack of physical buttons on the exterior chassis make the claims a bit suspicious. The most suspicious of the recently released images is the absence of any physical control buttons or cutouts on the shell, even for a power switch, meaning the sample is either an early working prototype or has been fabricated out of whole cloth. Adding to the confusion, within the purported shell is a metal anchor plate meant for internal components. The lining has cutouts for external controls like volume and power, which is consistent with previous rumored leaks through Techdy’s shell, only shows small holes where these ports should be. This possibly means the plate was taken from a previously-leaked shell and placed in the fabricated version.

Giving away the true intentions of the site’s post is an Android handset it has for sale called the “Basic Bear,” which appears to use a rebranded version of polycarbonate shell detailed in the report. For those of you who don’t know, Techdy recently opened up shop in April with an open-source game controller for the iPad mini and as such has no track record in “leaking” Apple products. The company was founded by M.I.C. Gadget’s Chris Chang, who has a decent history in reporting on Apple’s Far East movements.

They also don't buy expensive smart phones to just have to toss them when the phone gets burned. So, bringing up the drug dealer using these is just stupid to begin with.

If people really think that these (nonexistent) iPhones are going to be $99 unlocked without a contract you are crazy. Remember the plastic MacBook, they started at $999, that's not exactly a budget laptop even though it was Apple's low-end. If Apple were to actually release something like this it would probably be 8GB and still $300+ without a contract. They already fill that need by offering the last gen phone without having to manufacture a whole new device. Setting up a facility to make a new device is incredibly expensive when they can just already use a facility making a device and just put a few less GB of storage in it.

Both my parents and both my in-laws all have iPhones. And, have had them since the 3Gs, 2 of the 4 are now on 4s' and the other two have 5's. They are all in their late 50's.

There is no way that is a real iPhone. They'd never manufacture that crap. It looks horrible.

This phone was designed to garner attention by using the Apple rumor mill. With Apple nothing is certain until someone from Apple steps out on stage and holds it up in his hand.

We'll see phones like this every year because this kind of thing gets easy press distribution.

Stop writing about the same rubbish over and over.

Walmart? Did you know Walmart employees make up a large percentage of public assistance recipients? That said, what phone do you own, lol.

      $450/$550 is not that "budget".

How cheap do you want a pocket sized computer to be? If they make it so cheap that you're satisfied, guaranteed you complain that it feels cheap.

Trust me I'm not buying a budget iPhone but there are people in this world that don't make as much money but still would like to own an iPhone. I was just thinking about them. And a $200 iPhone (without contract) could be considered budget, I guess. Highly doubt that'll happen though.

      On contract??

If no contract, all smartphones are expensive. Don't think I should have to explain that...
