  • Microsoft's Windows 8 Still Trails All Mac OS X Installs

After a relatively strong month, Microsoft’s Windows 8 has finally surpassed Windows Vista in web usage, though slow uptake of the new operating system means that it still lags behind the total install base of Apple’s OS X. As of right now, Windows 8 gained 0.83 points of share over the month of June based on the most recent figures from NetMarketShare. This was enough to boost Microsoft’s latest OS to a 5.1% of the worldwide PC market, moving it ahead of Windows Vista, which fell 0.48% over the same period to a 4.62% share.

Microsoft’s Windows 7, which surpassed Windows XP’s install base in 2011, also dropped 0.48% in June, ending the month with a 44.37% share. Even 12 years after its original release, 37.17% of computers are still running Windows XP today. At just over 5% of the market, Windows 8 has a greater share than any individual version of Mac OS X. The whole OS X install base though beats Microsoft’s new and seemingly struggling operating system by roughly 2%, 7.2% to 5.1%. Total web usage of Apple’s OS X passed that of Windows Vista in September of last year.

The latest version of Microsoft’s operating system was an attempt the company made to reverse a trend that has seen consumers opting for smartphones and tablets instead of traditional PC form factors. Windows 8 was also meant to give Microsoft and its manufacturing partners a way to compete in the mobile device segment which is dominated by Apple on the tablet end. As an attempt to accomplish this goal, Microsoft ended up sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into the marketing for the launch of Windows 8, showing off the touch-centric interface along with a range of new hardware which combines both mobiles devices and traditional computers. The company boasted about strong pre-sales ahead of the launch of Windows 8 but the company didn’t end up being as successful as they thought they would be.

In an effort to keep up with competition, Microsoft is trying to breathe new life into its struggling operating system. In what appears to be a considerable reversal in decision-making, Microsoft recently showed off Windows 8.1, an update to the OS that brings back some features that many users were requesting. The new version will provide users the option to bypass Microsoft’s “modern UI” entirely, booting directly to the desktop that many users grew used to. We’ll have to see if the changes attract OS X users or if the popularity of Apple’s OS X will continue to grow over time.

Windows 8 is garbage! Windows 7 FTW!

Windows 8 is so terrible that I'd probably rather use OS X than Windows 8, and I absolutely cannot stand OS X!

Windows 8 installs exceeds any individual version of OS X shows its still more popular than the latest version of Apples OS but I guess that doesn't make such a great headline

I thought I was biased towards Apple - you can't just use pointless stats to try and knock MS.

Four year's worth of OSX beats 10 months of Windows - just.

I like some of the stuff they did with Windows 8, but the overall UI is just terrible, which I think makes a lot of people hate it. If you want the Windows 7 UI, there are shells availiable on the internet for it. Problem solved.

Some people (myself included) know XP in and out and can troubleshoot over the phone without me being in front of a computer. I am, however, using Windows 7 now.

I still prefer XP, as well. Win 7 is too much work to navigate to simple things.

Maybe Microsoft should create Win 9 XP and bring it back to the basics!

Are you serious? Are you actually comparing 9 years worth of OS X to one year of Windows?

I'm glad OS X is still not that popular, let Windows be the big dog! I enjoy being in the small group of OS X users!

Whether or not an upgrade is garbage compared to it's predecessor, I kinda thought this was a smart move on Apples part. It's certainly a reason I haven't setup a bootcamp partition yet. Just saying.

Creatures of habit. XP is a good OS but it's definitely becoming too far behind the times.

You're comparing installs of an operating system that's been out for less than a year for one that's been out for several and you're surprised the newer one is being used by less people?

What can you say? Windows 8 sucks, 7 was bloated & Vista was XP on roid rage. Windows has been windows since XP IMP, which I STILL think is their best OS EVER.

It seems like you should take into account that PC to Mac sales are about 20:1
