  • Japan's Top Carrier in No Rush to Carry Apple's iPhone

Despite Apple's powerful and overwhelmingly positive brand recognition within the tech savvy Japanese consumer marketplace, the iPhone remains less of a juggernaut smartphone than Apple would likely prefer.

Earlier this spring, Apple - for the first time in the company's history - secured the top spot among all consumer brands in Japan in Nikkeiís annual brand ranking. But while the Apple image is still strong in Japan, competitors are slowly and steadily chipping away at Apple's market share. In particular, Sony Corp.ís share of Japanís smartphone market has now climbed to a three-year high, widening its lead over Apple's iPhone.

On Thursday, further evidence of Apple's growing pains in Japan emerged as the nation's largest wireless carrier reiterated that it's simply in no hurry to carry the Apple smartphone.

"The question we need to ask is how many customers will continue to leave DoCoMo from now on because we don't have the iPhone," Kazuto Tsubouhi, NTT DoCoMo's Senior Executive Vice President, tells the Wall Street Journal. "There will always be some customers who switch to the iPhone, but things have changed from the time in the past when the iPhone looked like the god of all smartphones."

"Today, the iPhone may not necessarily offer the best technological specifications in every aspect, but itís a very well-balanced smartphone," Tsubouhi admits. "And recently, there are some Android phones that are also well-balanced. We are focusing on those models. So far, I think the strategy is working. In terms of product quality, the two Android models we are currently pushing are just as good as the iPhone."

He seems to be saying the iPhones dominance is also part of its weakness. People don't necessarily need or want the best phone out, they will settle with something close or almost like the best. That is what i've seen here at work.

First, I'm really curious how many of it's users are already using an iPhone.

Second, his claim silly. It's like asking why McDonalds doesn't have hot dogs. You know, b/c some people want hot dogs and McDonalds doesn't let hot dogs onto their menu.

This sounds exactly like how T-Mobile used to talk about the iPhone. Now that they can sell it they think it's the greatest phone on earth.

He is saying that his company makes more off of sales from other companies. They have better incentives, apple believes that it is a priviledge to carry its phone. Why take on the iphone and sell alot of them at lower profit margins when you can sell just as many samsung or sony devices with higher profit gains.

Also like Intel when they declined to make processors for the iPhone and then publicly regretted.

So what he is really saying is that as a carrier they want to be able to pre install a bunch of crap on the phone but can't.

If you have to chance to make more money by carrying the iPhone why wouldn't you? It sounds like he's almost too proud to carry the iPhone because of its been the "God of all smartphones" and doesn't want to do what everyone else is. His Disneyland comparison was pretty funny! It didn't really make sense, but it was funny! I love how he spelt it too: DisneyLand!

If you think the iPhone is the best, you are seriously delusional.
