  • Napster Releases iOS App

Napster, the former outlaw peer-to-peer file sharing service turned Best Buy subsidiary, now has an iOS app that will provide legal streaming access to the 10 million-plus tracks in the company's catalog. While the app is free, you do need to pay a monthly subscription, and downloaded songs will evaporate once you stop paying. The app's functions are minimal, but it's a pretty good option if you've been waiting for a US version of Spotify or iTunes-in-the-cloud.

You may recall that Napster had gotten into hot water back at the turn of the century when they were sued by a bunch of record labels for copyright infringement. The company eventually went legit and got bought up by Best Buy, and now has nearly a million users and over 10 million tracks including brand new releases as well as Billboard hits going all the way back to 1955. The mobile service allows subscribers to stream music to their browser or to the app, and you can search for tracks or artists, play and save songs, and make playlists as well as stream pre-made playlists already on Napster. There's also "Automix," Napster's version of the familiar Genius/Pandora/Last.fm-style auto-generated playlist.

The "Napster plus Mobile Access" subscription will run you $10 per month, or you can buy a yearly plan for $96. This will give you unlimited access to Napster's catalog on your iOS device or on the web from any browser, but any songs you saved will only be playable for as long as you keep your membership current.

Been waiting for this! NICE! My wife and I use Napster for unlimited music with the "To Go Option". Now we can download stuff straight to our iPhones! Hooray!!

Hopefully we can listen to the downloaded music in the iPod.app instead of being limited to the napster player.

I have a Napster subscription, so I downloaded this. It immediately wants me to upgrade my current subscription to a $96 annual one. I don't think so. Immediately deleted.

Did you read the post right above you? Pandora isn't even remotely the same thing.

I doubt it. Apple doesn't let other apps integrate in that way. It probably just streams as a way around not supporting Napster to Go.

      That doesn't sound right.

You mean the least amazing, clunky, non user-freindly app ever made? OK.

I'll just stick to pandora... If I wanna pay for an app that'll let me download or stream music I'd rather just pay a one time fee Of $9.99 for Mewseek and download all the music I want and with the option to send all my downloads to my library... Now doesn't that sound like a better way to spend $9.99

So why pay napster $9.99 monthly for something then just loose it all after... That's throwing ur money away.

I think it'll just fail, really. Pandora is the best.

For everyone saying pandora is better. Pandora is not even close to the same thing as napster. Napster plays specific songs, pandora plays random songs in the same genre of the song you picked to start with. Honestly I hate pandora I always end up skipping half the song it picks that it thinks I want to listen to. I don't want to pay for napster I just think it's kind of stupid to say pandora is better than something hardly similar to it.
