  • iOS 7 Weather Application Takes a Lot of Design Tips From Yahoo's Weather App

When Apple unveiled iOS 7 during the Keynote Monday afternoon at WWDC 2013, the improved Weather application was one of the large topics discussed.

Weather in iOS 7 has been improved greatly, and that’s to say the least. Weather now offers animated backgrounds that reflect upon the weather conditions outside. For example, if it’s raining or snowing, a live rain or snow animation appears behind the weather. If it’s sunny, a live sun glare animation appears behind the weather. This touch has been requested for a long time and really adds to the overall artistic value of the application.

Users will be able to pinch inside of the application to view all of the locations that the user has set to see the weather for.

One thing we noticed is how the redesign takes many characteristics from Yahoo’s Weather application that the company just released in the middle of April this year, including the font, weather status icons, and more. This isn't much of a surprise considering that Apple's Weather application is powered by Yahoo, but it's unusual to see Apple using the design features that another company has already implemented.

Yahoo’s Weather application still offers more features; however, Apple’s Weather application does finally take a step above basic information such as the five day forecast, the hourly weather for the current day, the temperature outside, and the high and low for the day. It now shows things like humidity, chance of rain, wind direction, and the feels like temperature outside.

It looks to be nearly a clone of Yahoo's app. There must have almost certainly been some cooperation there.

No clone. Yahoo! Weather is far superior. I'll wait for the jailbreak and tweak updates before our go ios7

Or that maybe they signed an agreement with Yahoo? Seems more likely to me.

Wow, looks almost just like it. I guess that explains why Yahoo's Weather app for Android is a completely different, and far uglier app. Apple must have had an agreement with Yahoo to keep this design exclusive to the iOS app.

The Yahoo weather app also uses a lot of design cues from HTC Weather that came on HTC's Windows Phone 7 phones 3yrs ago.

iOS 7 has been in development for a long time, and Yahoo's new weather app only recently came, so it stands to reason that (possibly) Apple came up with it first. Maybe. I don't know.

I agree, Apple's weather App has always been provided by Yahoo. A agreement wouldn't surprise me.
