  • Apple Previews New Mac Pro

Prompting thunderous applause from the capacity crowd on hand for the WWDC 2013 keynote this morning, Phil Schiller put it best when he said in true unvarnished fashion: "Can't innovate anymore, my ***."

Apple likely silenced some critics this morning when the company provided an unexpected sneak peak at the next Mac Pro, which is assembled domestically in the United States, today's presentation confirmed.

"This is a machine unlike anything we've ever made inside and out," Schiller said, pointing to the machine's dramatically smaller cylindrical design. All told, we're looking at a machine that's one-eighth the volume of what we're used to.

Remarkably, this pint-sized powerful can actually drive three 4K-resolution displays.

"It's 10 times faster than any hard drive you could put in a Mac Pro before," Schiller announced, pointing to the 12-core Intel Xeon processor. There's the fastest ECC memory ever observed in a Mac with 60 GBps bandwidth.

It has new PCI-based flash memory and the 2.0 version of Thunderbolt. And, yes, it is backward compatible with Thunderbolt 1.

The new Mac Pro will launch later this year.

Ok, Ok.... I got their new slogan all done. "The new Imac, you'll need a second job just to buy one" Seriously a 12 core xeon? nothing needs that power unless your into video editing or running some high end servers. ECC Memory? get ready to fork over serious cash as "MAC Memory" is already expensive enough. "10 Times faster then any hdd" Well sounds like ocz's enterprise level PCI based SSD solution (insanely expensive). My guesstimate this thing will cost $5000

That is why it is called the Mac "Pro". Its for pro users like video editors. It will not be $5000, far from it. Your statement is opinionated as are most on an online forum. No one is forcing you to buy it. If you do not need the Mac Pro, then buy an iMac or macbook. It sounds like they will suit your needs and price range a little better.

It all depends... on the price. Six months ago I was pricing a new mac pro (I have a 2007 model) to use for computational work (in 2007 the mac pro was competitive with comparable 8-core machines of Dell/HP/...). Six months ago, a 12 core model with OLDER technology than Dell/HP/... had to offer was 40% more expensive! Went with the Dell, installed Linux and saved loads of $.
