  • AppStore Developers Feel the Heat : Hackers Find Exploit in 4.x Without Jailbreak

Disclaimer: ModMyi does not support or condone piracy in anyway. Please take this article as informational purposes only.

It's a rather unfortunate piece of news for AppStore developers, as a group of hackers have discovered an exploit that will allow a user to install cracked apps without the use of a "rooted" iDevice.

The group, iModZone, has created an App which goes by the name of IPA God, and claims that they have successfully been able to install these "cracked/beta" apps via their program. This potentially leads to a large amount of loss in sales for developers that work extremely hard to produce quality apps, which is a huge discouragement for any developer.

The hackers posted a video that demonstrates the process, but it's not really 100%, as we have no idea what Firmware they are running except for their claims. I'm also a little confused as to how they even got the installer on the iPad without a Jailbroken device. It appears to work on iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Well the installing apps by my method is something apple left in for developers to share there apps for beta testing over the internet
However there is something more to this whole thing that really grinds my gears, and I'm sure it does many others as well. The hackers behind IPA God, have said that their App will actually cost money. It appears they are stating that the App will cost somewhere around $20!!! Not only is this extremely poor taste in Piracy, this is a complete insult to any AppStore developer that has been working many hard hours developing their paid App. This group decides to rip off other developers but at the same time, they turn around and are asking for money? Sounds a bit hypocritical don't you think?

We do not encourage the use of cracked apps or pirated software, and highly recommend you do NOT go near these guys. Do not encourage them in anyway, do not give them money, and for the love of god, please just purchase your Apps legally, so that the AppStore can continue to thrive. We don't want to discourage developers from creating great new apps.

If anything, I hope to see this 'IPA God' get cracked so that the hackers will see no profits out of this malicious act.

What are your thoughts about this? Could it all be a hoax to get some attention? Extremely poor taste in piracy?

It's actually a built-in feature to the OS, but only meant for distributing in-house apps (if the company you work for has custom apps not available on the App Store). You will probably have to register your UDID with their Ad Hoc Provisioning Profile for this to work. But the real question is "how do they sign apps that have already been compiled to their own developer account?"

However, it should be incredibly easy for Apple to shut this method down. All they have to do is cancel their developer account.

Chpwn confirmed on twitter that it can't be used for jailbreaking. That would be nice, but isn't going to happen unfortuanatly.

On another note its kind of funny that apple and some developers claimed that jailbreaking was the cause of all this piracy. And now we have this where you dont even need a jailbreak. Its stupid not to support the devs anyways. Lets just crack everything and kill the iphone cause no one wants to develop for it anymore. (sarcasm, by the way). I doubt that would ever happen, but it could.

the funny part is that these pirates are going to be pirated and no one will pay a dime for this tool.

Is Cdevwill part of the Chronic Dev Team??

      Quote from Chronic Dev Blog:

"Update 3: Just to help cut down on speculation, here is a list of some of our Twitters, any info read on them about the jailbreak will be legitimate:
      - chronic

      - posixninja
      - MuscleNerd
      - OPK
      - saurik
      - semaphore
      - AriX

(might have missed a few, if I did them they will be added later, so be sure to check back if you aren’t already doing so)"

Maybe he is, just wanting clarification I guess...

      EDIT:
Nevermind... Just found out for myself that he is a CDT member... Hence "Cdev"will... Pardon the momentary lapse of seeing the obvious

I call it a complete bullshite. People who do not JB won't bother with this, they don't care for pirated apps. People who do JB don't need to pay anything to install pirated stuff, they can install anything they want for free. Utterly complete waste of bandwith. Sensationalism at its worse or just a slow news day.

I like how people are up in arms about this. It isn't like you couldn't ALWAYS just jailbreak and pirate away. The jailbreak solution is free too. Why would you pay for this so you can steal apps when you can just steal apps in the first place?

Technically jailbreaking isn't "approved of" depending on who you talk to... This is actually news about something happening in the iOS community. Why NOT report it? That is the point of news. You know, to inform you of things you otherwise would not have known about?

      Yeah! Woot!

Coming from a dev that works for free, this is a massive F U to all the greedy devs. Haha, I hope this says around for a long time lol.

The only reason I'd use this is to get iMovie on my 3GS and iPad. I already bought it so it's technically not piracy. Right?

Least this is separating piracy from jailbreaking, so many people outside the community assume you jailbreak to pirate apps, not true... To charge for it though, piss take.

Someone needs to post an update for the "how 2 f417br34k" article, as these guys have clearly taken f417br34k1n9 to a whole new level.

      Huzzah!

      Hi all,

This is my first post so please gental

I say devs put your money where you mouth is, if you truly have an app that's worth paying for, offer a light version, simple. People will buy if it's worth having.

I know a lot of devs already offer light versions of their apps but apple should offer a try before you buy as it would limit these poor children from wasting there pocket money on c**p

It has got a lot of publicity - and needs it if they are going to sell it as it will be shut very soon.
I am surprised MMi gave it publicity.

I'm sure people like comex and such have been aware of this for ages. I remember one of them tweeter a while back saying that there were methods out there to install cracked apps without rooting your device

Lots of people ara aware of lots of things - it doesn't mean that someone, who is selling something that is almost certainly illegal, should be given publicity.
