  • Report: iRadio to Deliver Visual, Audio Ads

As WWDC 2013 approaches, we're hearing more and more about Apple's iAd network and how it will relate to the forthcoming iRadio streaming radio service.

According to the latest reports, iRadio will deliver both visual and audio ads.

"The audio ads will be sold via iAd, Apple's mobile ad network, according to a former Apple executive with knowledge of the situation," AdAge's John McDermott reported Wednesday. "In addition to audio ads, the streaming music service will also contain the mobile ads iAd currently sells."

Although advertisers will likely be charged a premium price for these ads, they are expected to be so valuable in their targeting precision that Apple may get what it's asking for in terms of the price tag attached to these iRadio spots.

As MMi reported earlier this week, sources close to the change in advertising tactics indicate that Apple has directed iAd engineers and sales staff to aggressively support its music streaming service, even though the formal launch is likely still months away.

The music service won’t be publicly available until later this year when Apple’s iOS 7 mobile-operating system is released, one person said.

“Apple intends to make its new radio service free to users and supported by advertising, similar to how Pandora’s mobile app works,” Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing knowledgeable sources. “The new service will be different from Apple’s iTunes in that the songs played won’t be limited to what a user has purchased, and listeners won’t own the songs they stream for free."

Apple has a chance to make this service so awesome and it sounds like they're blowing it even before it's released!

Cool, so now I can help burn up my monthly data allotment by listening to advertising. Nice move Apple.

I hope they will offer an ad-free subscription option.

Yeah, because it makes so much sense to mix visual ads into an auditory medium.....

Wouldn't this just mean that the iRadio app would contain normal iAds? Not like ad videos like in YouTube, but just normal iAds like you see everywhere anyway? I don't like the idea, but it's sure better than my original thoughts...

It means both the banners AND audio-visual ads. Not just one.
