Jailbreakers: Beware of Fake Greenpois0n Websites

As the jailbreak community eagerly awaits the latest jailbreak for iOS 4.1, some unscrupulous individuals have decided to exploit the situation for personal gain. A website, using greenp0isonís name, but a .info instead of a .com domain, has been set up to trick users into giving out personal information. The site invites users to download their software, but then starts phishing for personal information, such as Facebook login info, phone numbers and more. A YouTube video demonstrating the Jailbreak process and linking you to the fake site is also circulating, making this site seem all the more legitimate.

On this fake site, a large download button invites you to download the latest Jailbreak for all Apple iOS 4.1 devices. When you click this button, instead of downloading any software, you get a window that asks you to complete a survey before you can unlock the promised software. Out of curiosity, I actually completed a survey with fake information, just to see where it would lead, but the site just kept asking for more personal information. Beware of this website, it does not Jailbreak anything!

Developers are feverously working to bring actual Jailbreak software to the masses as soon as possible. According to twitter account @p0sixninja,

ďI see a few fake greenpois0ns popping up. Don't be fooled, it's probably a virus. Greenpois0n is the official site,Ē he states.

Iím sure Apple will be quick to point out this incident as reason enough to maintain tight control over the iOS platform. Unfortunately, trickery of this sort is sure to follow, as the Jailbreak community continues to evolve.

I canít wait to see what legitimate Jailbreak developers come out with next. Till then, I eagerly await an untethered Jailbreak for my iPhone 4.

I'm glad there are those fakes. Them n00bs/leechers deserve it if they go to these fake websites thinking they are real. Anyone whos following the news to a minimum or is not stupid could tell it's fake.

Unless it comes from the mouths of the dev team, I'm not buying it

A fool and his money are soon parted. I didn't even hear about this until this thread came up on here. I just watch twitter and check here. I really don't know who would be dumb enough to rely on a google search for a legit jailbreak...

but on a side note, i only follow reliable sources like modmyi and musclenerd's twitter.
How is that a side note? It's completely relevant to the topic and goes hand in hand with your 1st statement.

Not surprised that someone tries this.
I am sure Apple somehow going to make this the reason for more control, but we all know it is just another excuse. People will find ways to get around controls, if it is not this it would be another way.

It's stupid not to check here and twitter, but the others out there people who just want to jailbreak, because they just want to see how it is, and don't listen when people tell them to add dev-team to there twitter, and come here to mmi to find out information on jailbreaking iPhones. Because I know people who did it for cracked apps too, and that how maybe they get drawn in to these.

I don't think about upgrading or jailbreaking. Legit jailbreaks will always be announced on MMI.
When new firmware is released I check MMI regularly waiting for the jailbreak.
