  • Jailbreak Meetups Coming to a Town Near You

The jailbreak community is getting an opportunity to make interactions with fellow modders and hackers considerably more local and personal. MMi is leading the charge behind "Jailbreak Meetups," a new initiative that helps provide unique occasions for members of our increasingly expansive community to connect.

Are you a jailbreaking aficionado? Do you love showing off your modded phone? Want to chat about tweaks, apps, and more? Now you can use this community to organize a Jailbreaking Meetup in your area!
From Tampa, Florida and New York City, to Valparaiso, Indiana and Everett, Washington, jailbreak meetups are already taking root ahead of this summer's first ever "Global Jailbreak Meetup Day" - July 10, 2011 - a date set to commemorate the original iPhone jailbreak release.

If you're unfamiliar with Meetup.com, it's an online destination for people (7.2 million strong) to organize a local group or find one of the many (thousands) that are already meeting face-to-face around the world. Signing up is free and creating an account is easy. Once you're logged in, you can either create your own jailbreak meetup location and time (say, Panera in Anytown, USA on May 5th at 3:00 pm), or you can find a scheduled jailbreak meetup that's already planned somewhere close by and click "count me in" to let the meeting organizer know you're attending.

To find out more about Jailbreak Meetups, check out the official page and, if you're so inclined, sign up and connect with others in the jailbreak community. If you do, be sure to tag any relevant tweets, photos, and videos with #JailbreakMeetup

NYC is like a 3 hour drive for me. I'd be willing to drive down to Poughkeepsie or something and take a train into the city if someone would meet up with me at my stop. I rarely go to the city and I'd probably get lost, robbed, or murdered pretty easily

Too far. It takes 5 hours. It's basically San Ant. to Dallas except Frisco is 30 min North of Dallas. Houston is closer to you but I just wanted to throw it out there!

Maybe I'm missing something but are these just meeting where people are showing off their JB iDevices? Or is there like a set agenda for events that will take place at each location (I guess I'm asking more in reference to the 'Jailbreaking Day' or whatever it is being called?).

Interesting none the less that people are now having such meetings and even a national day to celebrate jailbreaking. Sounds like the jailbreaking community has its own WWDC, or should I say its own WWJBC!!

I am in for the NYC one. Would be driving in from WNY so if JetBlue doesn't have any specials going on, I will just drive.

I will only go if its actual devs and stuff. I am not going to hang out with people who are showing off how they know how to jailbreak using greenpo1son or something. I want to discuss with actual Cydia devs.

Yeah, see that is what I was wondering as well. I want to learn/discuss with actual devs, not Joe Blow down the street who finally JBroke his iPad and wants to show everyone. I actually signed up as a developer with Apple, started learning how to create apps, made a very BASIC app, but then everyone started making apps (big companies/game studios like EA for example) and I felt like my little app/knowledge was nothing compared to the big boys and I stopped developing.

But if this was something that could provide basic/intermediate knowledge from an actual Cydia dev or someone like that, I would LOVE to go to a location.

Edit: I know that jailbreaking is not all about app development. But for me, I have creating themes down to a science so that does not interest me as much as learning about app development. But I would welcome all information regardless what it was. I just dont want to go to a adult version of "Show and Tell", iDevice style.

Lots of folks who were small go bigger/more successful. Besides the Wright brothers (bicycle mechanics), didn't a coupla guys build something in a garage somewhere in California? Something about a piece of fruit? Orange? Banana? Oh wait, Apple!

Big companies can't do it all, and often can't think outside of the (proverbial) box. Keep trying. Who's to say you won't come up with the next Angry Birds?

      Good point.

But without the knowledge, there is nothing. The plane made by the Wright Bros. used bicycle parts (the pedal, chain, etc) so they used their current knowledge bikes to expand it into something else. I have no experience with programming, I majored in chemistry in college. So, I bought a book on Cocoa and other C++ programming. It was a lot to take in so I think that added to my doubts if I could do it. But your point was still a good one.

Knowledge is power. The more you learn, the more you know. The more you know, the more you can apply your knowledge to the job at hand. Only you can hold yourself back. It's not the big companies.

Case in point- here, this site, the devs. Giant corporation trying to halt jailbreaking. Yet....

Or, old fuddy-duddy like me learning to alter the GUI on his RAZR (knowing NOTHING!) but reading and learning and trial by error and finally succeeding, and now I can play with my iPhone fairly easily. Got my first computer eleven years ago, had been using a typewriter and then got a word processor (oh, the humanity!). Now I can play in the digital world.

I envison Global JailBreak Community Day as an opportunity to meet face-to-face while socializing. For example, in Pasadena I chose a venue that offers activities to help break the ice. I agree it would be helpful to have an agenda and set goals in addition to socializing.

I've lived in NYC for over 5 years and I can tell you it is safer than Disney world. Really. Look at the stats. It's on par with small towns in Ohio.
