  • Apple Facing a Fountain Fiasco in San Francisco

Two weeks ago, MMi reported that Apple is on the move in San Francisco. The tech giant recently submitted plans to open a new retail store on Union Square in a move that would essentially relocate its nine-year-old store just down the road but still within the beautiful city of San Francisco.

Unfortunately, the plan isn't going swimmingly, thanks to a fountain fiasco that has reportedly prompted Ed Lee, the mayor of San Francisco, to reconsider supporting the move. As it turns out, Apple's relocation would similarly require the relocation of an historic fountain that has been a landmark on Union Square for four decades.

Some residents, understandably, don't want to see the fountain go just to accommodate Apple. So the Mayor is said to be exploring options that may allow Apple and the fountain to peacefully share the same space. Lee admits that the fountain's fate wasn't considered when the Apple relocation plans were first brought to his attention. "We weren't necessarily focused on that side," Lee said of the fountain's location.

For now, it isn't clear if this issue will ultimately prohibit Apple from moving into its desired new retail crib. But for the time being, there's a fountain full of headaches for the local government and Apple to work through.

"...the beautiful city of San Francisco"

Am I the only one that thinks SF is overrated? The Bay scenery is great, sure, but the city itself has way too many bums demanding money, sirens wailing, an incomprehensible public transit system, is dirty and smells.

      +1
It's been like that since I was a child! We used to always go there w/ my mom since I'm half Asian and Chinatown was disgusting...

BTW, can't Apple just incorporate the fountain into the store

That is a good idea, however, might not be possible due to ownership and maintenance issues.

+1 Look how tolerated public urination and defecation is in the city. SF could once again be a really nice place. Unfortunately to many people are more worried about allowing bums to poop in public then having a nice place to walk.

I don't understand why they can't just build around it creatively or move it to the corner etc. I'm sure they'll figure it out.

It's not even that old, it's from the 1970's !

Wow I'm getting quite the heated debate about this on my facebook wall. I might have to post a few back and forth comments on here after the dust settles.

I'm sure apple could care less for the fountain, eventually someone knew this was gonna be an issue. They just don't give a rats ***.

SanFran is GARBAGE! I've been there 3 times in the last 15 years and it got uglier and uglier every time.

They ought to just move it down somewhere nice like San Diego. But this is Crapple we're talking about so that'll never happen.

      Anyway........

Imagine the sales in AppleCare+ since it covers water damage on iPhones and iPads. It's a win-win Apple, have it right inside of the store.

Surround it by glass and have a maintenance man care for it. It'd look cool in the center of a store! All the product testing tables can be situated around the fountain...

Or, they could have a 360* Genius Bar w/ the fountain behind them.

Boom! Problem solved and you're welcome Apple!!!

I disagree. I hated the 4 because of Antennagate. Loved the 4S and love the 5. I loved the 5 even before evasion. Now I love it even more.

Yeah, but then it would be free to look at the fountain, but if you wanted to see it running.....there would be an in-app purchase
      for that....

Happy to see there are plenty of people that don't care for SF - that should help keep the rents down for the rest of us ;-)
