  • GV Mobile Headed Back to App Store

It looks like a Google Voice app banned from the App Store may be coming back under the new relaxed guidelines. Sean Kovacs, developer of the GV Mobile app, emailed Apple after the rules for app approval were posted yesterday, since none of the updated provisions applied to his app. Seems like he got a positive response: he tweeted that the app "will most likely get back in," and if all goes well, it will be available within a week.

GV Mobile, which has been on Cydia since the App Store banhammer dropped in 2009, ran afoul of Apple's unwritten rule against "duplicating features that the iPhone comes with," as Kovacs was told at the time. Kovacs went through the long list of over a hundred rules, and couldn't find anything that should disqualify GV Mobile. He emailed Apple to ask specifically, and got the go-ahead to resubmit. The new guidelines do not have any clear restriction against "duplicate functionality," though rule 8.3 ("Apps which appear confusingly similar to an existing Apple product or advertising theme will be rejected") could possibly be used as a reason to block the app. Kovacs also discovered that he couldn't resubmit under the same name, so it's possible that the app may be released as "GV Phone" or something, and people who purchased it before the ban will have to buy it again. Kovacs said he is working with Apple to correct the issue.

Obviously, Apple can block an app for any reason it wants or no reason at all; they have certainly done so in the past. The apparent new liberal attitude - being up-front about the rules, relaxing restrictions against cross-platform compilers, etc. - could be signs of a new good-guy approach from Apple, or it could just be their pre-emptive strike against looming federal investigations. Either way, it's hard to imagine they'd have even bothered if it wasn't for the presence of an alternative marketplace like Cydia.

It's cool that it's coming back but I already integrated GV into my phone in the most convoluted way possible

      1. Texting - All done via e-mail now. I can reply and send using the address GV assigns to the person.

      2. Calling - This one's more fun. First, I enable text messaging for the iphone and ask someone to text me. The text comes from from a 313 or 406 or whatever random area code number. This number is owned by Google. If you call this number from a phone under your GV account, it'll look up which number it assigned it to and automatically redirect you. I put them under "assistant" and that's that. No need for web apps or apps at all. Once I have their GV assigned number I call them using that.

There are definitely better ways. I'm currently ironing out the final details on my iPad 3G, am planning to post about my methods tomorrow. Stay tuned!

I'm hoping it will be able to incorporate a call recording feature so my ex wife can't lie in court and say I told her a bunch of crap that was never said. I'd also have a record of her being a psycho threatening to burn down my parents house. Always hopeful as the iPhone 4 has some kind of hardware limitbthat prevents this and I'm really sick of paying for international LD charges to recording some server in Indiana from Canada.

Maybe you should stop talking to her and go through an attorney for anything involving her?

Yeah me too. Jailbroke versions is good for now, but legit app store version will be great.

How so. What features does it have that the jailbreak version does not?

      Not really features, but characteristics.

      1. It's free.

      2. For me, GV Mobile+ (because it has to dial your GV#, pause, press "2", then dial again) connects in about 45 seconds. The webapp connects in about 5 seconds.

So Sean, what are your plans with the Cydia version? Will it be updated in parallel with the app store version or are you going to abandon the Cydia version? If the latter, how bout coupon codes for all who bought the Cydia version?

He's putting the app for free this Saturday night I believe so he'll give everyone a chance to grab it without paying.
