  • Remote IMEI Unlocks Now Available for iPhone

Reports have been trickling in the last few hours via my email, IMs, etc that there is a new remote unlocking via IMEI available for all GSM iPhones. There have been a few forum goers mention they can do it, which seems a bit shady (no actual business, no way to get money back other than trust, etc). By far the most reputable we've seen though is Negri Electronics, whom we've known for years. They've been selling unlocked phones for years, and are trustworthy good folks.

Here's the gist of it - you pay someone $175 (that seems to be the going rate across everyone we've heard from), and send them your iPhone's IMEI. Within 24 hours, they send you an email saying it's unlocked. You then sync with iTunes, and your iPhone is unlocked. That's it. No codes to enter - you're just unlocked. It doesn't work with Verizon iPhones (they don't take a SIM card), and it doesn't work on any iPads. But any GSM iPhone - $175 for an unlock that won't care what firmware, update, or jailbreak status you're on. Just like a factory unlocked iPhone (which it basically then IS), it's unlocked for the life of the phone.

How does it work? Well - Apple has a database already which they query when you do a sync in iTunes to check your devices lock status. That's how it works if you call your carrier and they unlock the device for you - you sync in iTunes and it is unlocked. There is a source wholesaling remote unlocks, and many in the industry suddenly today picked up the ability to do this. It would seem someone with access to this db is basically selling that access - as far as my research shows, everyone who is selling this is getting it from the same source. This could be totally sanctioned and legit, or this service may just as suddenly stop being available one day (although once you've been unlocked you'll be so forever).

If you've got a need for this, and your carrier isn't going to do it for you - this is good news. I have not yet personally tested this, although the folks at Negri have, and my IMEI is in the queue to be unlocked, I will update this story tonight with my personal results. I would strongly recommend you stay away from random eBay folks and websites that are popping up to do this, and use Negri Electronics's service (same cost) if you're interested (no, we don't get a cut and we aren't getting anything out of recommending their service over others, ha). They've been around a decade doing this with a solid track record.

Again, I will update this story with my personal experience sometime tonight.

UPDATE: I received word back from Negri Electronics that my iPhone was unlocked. I synced in iTunes, and didn't get a "unlocked" message (only 60% of users do though). I am currently trying to find a non-AT&T SIM I can cut and install to verify the unlock. I do not have ultrasn0w installed on this iPhone, nor have I ever. I will update again asap when I can confirm.

Negri Electronics has also paused the service as they have had a huge response and the source has a queue of thousands of IMEI's. Once those have been processed, the service will reopen.

UPDATE 2: Success! I have verified my iPhone 4 is unlocked. It wasn't QUITE as simple as advertised - I wound up having to make sure I was updated to 4.3.1, and when I did iTunes told me "Congrats, your iPhone has been unlocked!" But I did no processing other than update to 4.3.1, and have verified the iPhone works on an active T-Mobile SIM. I do not have ultrasn0w installed, nor have I ever on this device. Here's a couple screenshots:

I highly doubt it; that ship has long since sailed and Negri probably wants to hold onto that money for as long as possible to collect the interest. Let's assume 7000 orders at $175 a pop. Even with low rates, they're probably making a killing.

Edit: OK, so not exactly a killing, but they're making money.

"Update 2:52PM PST 4/26/2011 – As promised we are updating the blog with the newest information we have. We have submitted a group of IMEI’s to a new “source”. We were to hear back an hour ago, but to avoid any further delay on posting an update we have decided to simply let you know of the plan. Once these return (hopefully by the end of the day today) we will do a mass submission for all the current orders that are in processing. If all goes well we will have a large amount of the iPhones unlocked. We will begin rolling out emails updating you Thursday afternoon. Usually the process takes about 24 hours, submitting the IMEIS tomorrow morning will result in a return of Thursday. Of course this is contingent on our source returning the small order we placed yesterday. As always if you are not willing to wait, and have run out of patience please fill out this form to cancel your order. Just to clarify a few things before we conclude. 1. We are not lying in hopes you keep your order. We are actually paying more for the service than we have collected from you. 2. We are not “promising” to have your device unlocked by Thursday, please read the update. We will do all we can. 3. We are blocking several Twitter users for sending multiple tweets with the same general message, or sending threats or accusations. The more serious threats have been shared with the users local police departments. 4. You are free to cancel at any time. Those of you that do not have patience and need to have resolve, please fill out this form to cancel your order. We can refund your money, or if you have not been charged, we will simply cancel the order. 5. We are not begging to keep your order, we are not advising you to cancel either. We just ask that you do what you want. We have done our best and unlocked over 550 iPhones, it was a great service and we would like to think of it as a success. Many of you are still waiting, and we plan to fill/complete the order – this is obvious. 6. We just ask that you have patience and if you do not have that will power, please fill out this form to cancel your order. 7. Please contact us if you have questions. However please do not contact us on Twitter, Facebook, the Blog and our contact form all with the same question. This will simply delay your reply, and delay other customers replies by 4x the wait time. Please have patience and courtesy when contacting us. 8. All orders that have been requested to be cancelled will be cancelled within 1-2 business days. 9. In the mean time we are offering Free Blackberry Codes to all our of customers. If you would like to recevie a free Blackberry unlock code or know someone who needs one, please feel free to fill out this form. Thank you for your time, and your patience. We hope to make you all happy very soon."

I think they don't want to loose the money because that doesn't make sense. How come they're going to pay to unlock your phone more than what your paying!!

I don't believe negri are scamming anyone, I think they are being as honest and open as they can be.
If you don't - then ask for your money back.
I could be wrong, but I've seen a lot of scammers and they don't seem to be one.
      Just my opinion.

Not sure who Negri is but rud3bwoy is beyond a doubt scamming people.
Look at his heat under rud3bwoy if you don't believe me. Better yet
do a Google search on rud3bwoy and see what pops up. And all five of
us who were scammed did ask for our money back to no avail. We are all
in the process of filing police reports. This was just FYI because I
don't want anyone in this thread to take advice from a thief.

I'm not saying they are scammers, all I'm saying that how they can say they are paying more than what they're charging. Obviously you don't make a business to loose money. I wish to all the people who summit their IMEI to Negri to have their phones unlock soon!!!

If only i know what exactly they did to u, i will also be more careful with them, cos there was a particular order i made but i used royalmail for shipment, the items got lost, royalmail said the sender shd make a claim, i contacted rebel n they told me they can't help me,that it is in d terms and agreement that they will not be liable to any shipment made thru royalmail,so i lost the items worth 100pounds. I wont mind if u can just share ur experience so we know how to be careful with them, now i used dhl(more expensive) but i'm getting hourly update of my shipment, seems more reliable

So their T&C say they don't have to deliver the goods? Isn't that illegal?
It doesn't surprise me - I bought one of the original RebelSIMs, it didn't work so they sold me a device to reprogram it, which didn't work. Their customer support was appalling and their product didn't work. Probably the worst company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with.
I certainly wouldn't have paid for another one if I was you, they should be claiming from Royal Mail.
I hope you have more success than I did.

And Negri continues to drag this out........ With their "source" who can't be bothered to provide any information.

It's now May 2 and no real update. I've canceled my order. This Negri guy needs to man up and concede defeat here instead of holding on to people's money.

The funny thing on Negri's site even though the remote unlocking is not available they sure did unlock a bunch of there iphones which they are selling like they came from the factory! In which case I'm sure they cannot be guaranteed to stay unlocked!

shouldn't the mods update the first page with more information. i almost ordered, good thing I decided to read the last page.

I upgraded to the latest and instead of applying the cooked ipsw file from snowbreeze I applied the original. lol.

oh well. good thing the iphone has become my backup phone and I don't need the unlock like right now. but i was curious on the imei unlock.

SuperPaddyNL says on twitter that there should be no problem.

@SuperPaddyNL: To every one asking permanent unlock is still permanent so upgrading is ok.

@SuperPaddyNL: @OmniChinchilla believe one or two of my followers tried it in the early beta stages.
