  • Remote IMEI Unlocks Now Available for iPhone

Reports have been trickling in the last few hours via my email, IMs, etc that there is a new remote unlocking via IMEI available for all GSM iPhones. There have been a few forum goers mention they can do it, which seems a bit shady (no actual business, no way to get money back other than trust, etc). By far the most reputable we've seen though is Negri Electronics, whom we've known for years. They've been selling unlocked phones for years, and are trustworthy good folks.

Here's the gist of it - you pay someone $175 (that seems to be the going rate across everyone we've heard from), and send them your iPhone's IMEI. Within 24 hours, they send you an email saying it's unlocked. You then sync with iTunes, and your iPhone is unlocked. That's it. No codes to enter - you're just unlocked. It doesn't work with Verizon iPhones (they don't take a SIM card), and it doesn't work on any iPads. But any GSM iPhone - $175 for an unlock that won't care what firmware, update, or jailbreak status you're on. Just like a factory unlocked iPhone (which it basically then IS), it's unlocked for the life of the phone.

How does it work? Well - Apple has a database already which they query when you do a sync in iTunes to check your devices lock status. That's how it works if you call your carrier and they unlock the device for you - you sync in iTunes and it is unlocked. There is a source wholesaling remote unlocks, and many in the industry suddenly today picked up the ability to do this. It would seem someone with access to this db is basically selling that access - as far as my research shows, everyone who is selling this is getting it from the same source. This could be totally sanctioned and legit, or this service may just as suddenly stop being available one day (although once you've been unlocked you'll be so forever).

If you've got a need for this, and your carrier isn't going to do it for you - this is good news. I have not yet personally tested this, although the folks at Negri have, and my IMEI is in the queue to be unlocked, I will update this story tonight with my personal results. I would strongly recommend you stay away from random eBay folks and websites that are popping up to do this, and use Negri Electronics's service (same cost) if you're interested (no, we don't get a cut and we aren't getting anything out of recommending their service over others, ha). They've been around a decade doing this with a solid track record.

Again, I will update this story with my personal experience sometime tonight.

UPDATE: I received word back from Negri Electronics that my iPhone was unlocked. I synced in iTunes, and didn't get a "unlocked" message (only 60% of users do though). I am currently trying to find a non-AT&T SIM I can cut and install to verify the unlock. I do not have ultrasn0w installed on this iPhone, nor have I ever. I will update again asap when I can confirm.

Negri Electronics has also paused the service as they have had a huge response and the source has a queue of thousands of IMEI's. Once those have been processed, the service will reopen.

UPDATE 2: Success! I have verified my iPhone 4 is unlocked. It wasn't QUITE as simple as advertised - I wound up having to make sure I was updated to 4.3.1, and when I did iTunes told me "Congrats, your iPhone has been unlocked!" But I did no processing other than update to 4.3.1, and have verified the iPhone works on an active T-Mobile SIM. I do not have ultrasn0w installed, nor have I ever on this device. Here's a couple screenshots:

You don't need to restore to get iTunes activation if your iPhone is Jb

If your iPhone is JB then you can do this without restoring:
      1-go to var/root/Library/Lockdown/activation_records
2-take a copy of activation_records and save it
3-delete the folder activation_records from iPhone and restart
4- connect to iTunes and the phone will be activated .
This way you can avoid to restore the iPhone.

      --------------------- Success -------------------

      Original: 3GS, iOS 4.2.1, working T-Mobile user w/Ultrasn0w

Yesterday, I ordered this from WirelessFreedom615 (an MMI member). Today he called to say it was ready. Good personal service

      How I made it work:

      1. Uninstall ultrasn0w (yep, I had a working software lock), reboot
      2. Connect to iTunes, recognized iPhone - but blank white page
      3. Waited 5 minutes. No change
      4. Disconnected from iTunes.
      5. Power off/on 3GS
      6. After boot, Whoolaaa .... Five (5) Signal Bars
      7. Reconnect to iTunes
      8. iTunes "Congratulations, you phone is unlocked" everything else normal.
      9. Called 611 --- working. Called WirelessFreedome615 to report success on newly factory unlocked 3GS

Note1: Did not restore or upgrade
Note2: Did not sync or reset network settings
Note3: BB is original 4.26.x. If necessary, I can always reinstall ultrasn0w
Note4: Push, youtube still working. (Worked before, still works!)

One issue: My existing T-Mobile carrier bundle is not displaying the image. Will take me awhile to sort this out, maybe an invalid signature or some other stuff. This is minor and should easily be corrected.

I paid full retail for all generations of the iPhone and AT&T nor Apple never offered to unlock mine! It's cool, I'll continue to hammer there network by downloading +50GBs a month!

be careful though they are cracking down on people who do that thats why TMOBILE rocks and if ATT buys them i wont know what to do with myself...hammer away sir!

This won't work, my iPhone 4 is locked to AT&T and I tried, 24 hours later I got a message from 02 saying this "iPhone cannot be unlocked"

obviously you've never used RSA SecurID. Pretty difficult to crack 128 bit plus the dual layer PINs. Even with social engineering, the 'HelpDesk' at apple would flag the acct for abnormal usage/reset.
Then there is the SQL injection... i doubt that apple is that far behind on updates...

just wondering, how did 02 contact you? they just told me that it would be done in 24hrs and that id have to sync with itunes to complete it.

so.. did you get the message from itunes?

Yes, but they might not be able to tell the difference between a true factory unlocked iphone, and one unlocked with this method? I'm new at the unlocking stuff, and I've never had experience with this so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it is apple game to make an additionl $170-$175.
And then they screw all us over by reversing it in a few weeks/months. But who knows, maybe someone cracked the algorithm?

IIRC, they texted me on my other phone and said this phone cannot be unlocked

^how long ago? I did it a hour ago I filled out a form. I used a fake uk o2
phone number and my email, gave them my imei, said I was traveling to England and now waiting. No conformation email though. :-/

All of you need to give it a rest with the o2 unlock thing when you don't have a phone purchased for o2's network.

Gee I bet o2 never catches on that you gave them a fake o2 number, or that you chatted them from america and played dumb with not having a phone number so you gave them your imei instead.

Give up, it doesn't work, stop wasting space in this thread.

What people who are reading this thread want to know about is the legitimacy of this unlock from negri, et al for $175. And we want to hear about it from people who have been members of this site for longer than 1 day.

This is a promising development, especially for those of us who are dealing with higher basebands that the dev team has not yet adequately supported. At the same time I don't know if I trust a service like this and would like to see more results before I take such a costly plunge.

Here's a question for those in the know: How much of a security risk to give your IMEI out?
    1. Jay316's Avatar
      Jay316 -
I'm surprised the Dev Team hasn't come up with a working version of Ultrasn0w. Didn't they preview the 02.10.04 baseband unlock last November?

Also we've never to see any official confirmation of this working

Well in uk t-mobile charge 15 for same service and no min contract!! So only a mug would pay this ( meaning some one in the uk ) clearly where this option Is not available 175-200 is still high when it might add 100 to resale value lol
