  • EA Developing Frostbite Go Mobile Game Engine for Apple's iOS and Google's Android

A mobile version of EA’s powerful Frostbite engine which was used to create recent titles in series such as “Battlefield” and “Need for Speed,” will be coming to Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The mobile engine, dubbed Frostbite Go, was revealed on the official site for the software created by EA-owned developer DICE. The site refers to Frostbite Go as one of DICE’s “most exciting current projects.”

The engine which is currently in development is said to be “empowering EA game developers” with valuable tools and aims to bring “true Frostbite experiences to all major platforms,” according to the site. In another section of the official Frostbite website, EA goes one step further and confirms that the engine will be available on a wide range of platforms, from iOS and Android to Sony’s recently announced PlayStation 4 console. The details were first discovered this week on the NeoGAF forums by user “Nirolak.”

EA hasn’t announced any specific titles for iOS but the site does confirm that games are actively in development using the Frostbite Go engine. Frostbite Go will join a number of high-profile commercial game engines that are available for iOS. The most notable being the Unreal engine from Epic Games, which powers games like the popular Infinity Blade series with console-quality graphics.

For those of you unfamiliar with the trend, EA already has a large presence on the iOS platform. In recent months the company has even made a strong push toward casual and “freemium” titles. Out of the many games in the company’s portfolio, the most high-profile mobile releases this year include Real Racing 3, The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Tetris, with the latter two being two of the highest grossing applications available on the iPhone.
