  • iPhone 5S May Introduce Sapphire Crystal Touch Home Button

The hottest chatter emerging from the rumor mill today is that Apple's next-generation iPhone 5S, which could debut within the next 8-12 weeks, may present a snazzy new fingerprint-scanning home button enclosed by a scratch-proof sapphire crystal glass.

Although rumors have persisted for some time now with regard to Apple introducing a fingerprint sensor in a subsequent iPhone refresh, this news from supply chain sources in Taiwan suggests the possibility of a much bigger effort on Apple's part to make the home button as revolutionary as possible.

Itís thought that using sapphire crystal, which has a hardness second only to diamond, will prevent the button from getting scratched and ruining the fingerprint sensor.
Apple, of course, has already demonstrated an appetite for sapphire crystal, as evidenced by the iPhone 5 camera lens on its back. Apple opted for sapphire crystal as a means to minimize scratches and preserve photo quality for users.

For now, sources speaking with Taiwanese website TechNew maintain the sapphire crystal touch home button is practically a sure-thing on the next iPhone refresh.

Can't wait, IMHO the "S" models have always been the best.

I would speculate that the home button still functions by physically pressing the button in. It would be weird for apple to eliminate an iconic button entirely. If it is touch it better be good. And flat too. I hate the indent.

i dont know whats the need for a fingerprint reader on an iphone...security? seems a gimmick to me personally.
Come on Apple, lets add NFC instead!

Fingerprint & NFC are both gimmicky & completely unnecessary

Of course the S models are the best.

Who would buy a 4S if it was worse than a 4?

Who would buy a 5S if it was worse than a 5?

But theres your problem. A 5 is better than a 4S is it not?

NFC is used alot more. I find my self using a credit card(visa, MC) via the NFC system way more than using the pin or the swipe. I wouldn't call NFC as useless as a finger print reader.

This is one reason I wait for the S models and not waste money buying a new phone every year.

I would. I've never been anywhere that has NFC for commercial use. Nor do I know a soul who actually uses NFC to begin with. It's honestly more useless than the security of a fingerprint scanner.

Well i'd see as a way to get rid of the passcode out of iOS and use a fingerprint to open the phone up in the app or homescreen. That takes out the bypassing glitches that Apple has been patching up with updates. Instead of trying open a app and then have to put in your passcode first. Be easier to have your thumb on the home button and goes directly to the app.

Of course they're the best. It's the previous model with some hardware and slight software upgrade. Why would Apple release a new phone that is inferior to the previous model?

Unless you're also suggesting the 4S is better than the 5...then you're just crazy.

Well obviously since you are only compairing them to the models they replaced. 4s better than the 4? Yep.

Where do you live? NFC is everywhere in Australia. It's rare to find a retail location that doesn't have it.

And I find myself needing a VISA with chip/pin instead of swipe when I'm outside the US. Oh, we'll.

      True, but not true...

Me, I never buy the Xs. "S" is better than 5 of course (small improvement in hardware sometimes) but 6 will be a big improvement in hardware than 5, so I will wait. Why waste my upgrade in one "5S" when I can use it for the next iPhone 6. Look at the iPhone 4 case, I see somebody with an iPhone 4S and you can't tell if it is 4 or 4S.
