  • AT&T To Drop HTC's "Facebook Phone" Due To Slow Sales

After just over a month of slow sales and a subsequent price drop to $0.99, AT&T will reportedly discontinue the HTC First, which is otherwise known as the “Facebook Phone.” According to an inside source, HTC’s First, the first handset to come with Facebook’s “Home” launcher pre-installed, has performed so poorly that AT&T will end sales of the device and return all unsold units back to HTC.

Although exact numbers have yet to be revealed, the person claims AT&T saw nationwide sales barely moving, with less than 15,000 units being sold since the device’s debut in early April. The telecom recently dropped the price of the smartphone down to $0.99 but that didn’t help the sales front as much as they expected it to.

The folks at BGR noted that HTC reserved dedicated floor space for the phone and the deep discount was meant to move as much inventory as possible before the period was up. However, AT&T in a follow-up statement said the following:

…as mentioned previously, we do pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.
The HTC First was billed as the flagship device for Facebook’s Home experience as it was optimized to take advantage of the social network giant’s Android launcher. Although it appears that the U.S. run of the handset is coming to an end, future international availability remains unknown. If the U.S. run is any indication of what’s to come for the device, the future doesn’t look too bright but time will tell.

Hahaha What a shocker! The FB app is annoying enough with all the ads your feed gets slammed with, I can't imagine your entire phone being integrated with the privacy Swiss cheese that is FB.

BGR has been pumping out good, verifiable news years before theverge was even conceptualized.

I wouldn't buy a Facebook phone either. It's a social network. Not an operating system.. Facebook is dying in my area too.

Im still surprised at FB's popularity and dominance in the social networking world. Nothing else they try ever seems to work. Stick with what you know i guess.

It was a bad idea from the start and everybody knew the First was dead on arrival. Also I tried Facebook Home on my Galaxy S3 and I have to say that it was the worst launcher application I've ever used. The lack of customization and the background always being either a friend's picture or a status of theirs and the apps are hidden off the screen. What else is a launcher for? it's to have easy access to all your apps and widgets which FB Home failed to deliver
