  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Found Being More Expensive to Build Than Apple's iPhone 5

An analysis of parts found inside Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 has concluded the flagship smartphone is more costly to build than Apple’s iPhone 5, with a price tag of roughly $237 for the 16GB model. The analysis was conducted by IHS iSuppli, finding a great deal of difference between the U.S. and Korean versions of the Galaxy S4. Their estimates found that the AT&T version is cheaper at $237, than the $252 model build for Korea, when the costs of the parts and manufacturing are combined.

The biggest difference in cost comes from the processor as the AT&T model features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU that is estimated at $20, while the Korean model has a $28 Samsung Exynos 5 Octa. The costs compare to an estimated total of $205 for parts and manufacturing of Apple’s 16 GB iPhone 5. The two competing handsets are pricing comparably with carrier contract subsidies, suggesting that Apple makes greater profit margins on the iPhone 5 than Samsung does with the Galaxy S4.

The estimated values don’t include the money invested in research and development of both the hardware and software of course. The teardowns only represent the component prices and costs to assemble the devices. The most expensive part of the Galaxy S4 is the 5-inch touchscreen display, which is estimated to have a $75 price tag. The Super AMOLED screen features a 441-pixel-per-inch density and is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. Other part estimates include the 13-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras ($18), 16 GBs of storage ($28), power management components ($9), and various sensors ($18).

The total bill of materials cost for the U.S. AT&T version is $229, while the Korean version costs $244. Both have an estimated manufacturing cost of $8.50, which brings them to their respective final costs.

iPhone's are extremely expensive. Yet, I see teenagers with them all the time. As well as various androids. You can't really say it's a rip off or too expensive when it's a growing industry that everyone wants, and will pay almost anything to get.
In other news, I just wrote an email on my LAPTOP today... First time in forever. Normally I just use my overly expensive phone to do it....

Only differences is Samsung S4 is not made to compete with the iphone 5,
wait till the iphone 5S comes out... those are the real competition.

      Agreed.

Also, Apple is old news and has been. It's time for something new.

But then the Galaxy S4 will already be several months old so you'll have to wait for the S5, but then you'll have to wait for the iPhone 6, then the S6, then 6S, on and on forever.

What's a LAPTOP? Does it make phone calls? Can I play Angry Birds on it?

my S4 feels just great in my hands., at with scree larger than my S3, its smaller. it has a pixel density that blows away the iPhone, it has a 1080p HD display, it has surround sound, expandable memory, a removable battery, Quad core processor, a more powerful and robust OS that offers freedom and flexibility that even a jailbroken iPhone cannot compete with, it has multitasking and an absolutely amazing camera that Im sure you're jealous of.

oh, and Bluetooth works--unlike the iPhone.

Which you can't see without a microscope rendering it useless.

Surround sound from a phone. Ya that makes all the difference.

Ridiculous statement. I can replicate pretty much anything and more with my jailbroken iPhone 5. Plus all tweaks and mods are easily accesible in one place (cydia).

bluetooth works just fine on my jailbroken iPhone.

Do you not get tired of continually coming to modmy"I" and constantly bashing something you clearly do not know much about anymore? Is there no Android forum you can go to and all praise your Samsung's and sing Kumbuya in a circle?

I use Bluetooth extensively with my iPhone 5. A2DP, AVRCP, Headset, and Handsfree profiles. It works great. I rarely have the kinds of glitches I got with every single other Bluetooth device I've used.

Bluetooth used to be a lot glitchier in the iOS 3 days, but no more than other Bluetooth devices I've used.

True multitasking? As opposed to fake multitasking? If you define true multitasking by all apps open continually running in the background taking up resources and battery life then the iPhone can have that too with a jailbreak (backgrounder).

Backgrounder isn't supported anymore, afaik. Even the Beta version is very glitchy on iOS 6.x

Apple has quasi (fake by your words) multitasking. No way to get around that. Just because it runs in the background does not necessitate using battery excessively, and with phones current processors the impact is minimal. And you don't have to do any hoop jumping to get that ability with Android. So fun to see the defensiveness over something the iPhone can't do stock to stock.
As for battery life, my iPhone compares about the same with my RAZR HD.

I am very defensive of both iOS and android. Have and use both and don't see why people feel the need to always put one or the other one down. iOS way of multitasking is great in my opinion. Switching back and forth quickly being able to pick up where I left off in each app is what multitasking is all about isn't it? I find in my Nexus 4 things can get a little bogged down when I have tons of stuff running and find it faster switching between apps on my iPhone. Multitasking does look a lot better on my nexus 4 though and for the most part you are right, I don't see much battery drain differences when running stuff although haven't really done any testing. I just think calling iOS multitasking fake, quasi or whatever anyone wants to call it is just plain dumb. It works differently but just as well. Even without backgrounder.

Isn't really needed in my opinion anymore. Probably why it hasn't been maintained.
