  • iOS 6.1.4 for iPhone 5 Released

Apple has Thursday afternoon released a software update for iPhone 5, bringing the current firmware version for iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1.4. Notably, the update doesn't appear to be for any other iOS devices. The update is showing up via Over the Air (OTA) and in iTunes for many iPhone 5 users... for those that it hasn't shown up for yet, it should show up soon.

iOS 6.1.4 appears to only update the audio profile for the iPhone's speakerphone. The update doesn’t appear to be significant for any other reasons.

For obvious reasons, jailbreakers should stay away from this update. The evad3rs have openly stated that they have no plans to jailbreak iOS 6.1.3, and therefore a minor update like iOS 6.1.4 wouldn’t be significant enough to change their minds. It would be more time-worthy to save exploits for major future firmwares, like iOS 7. iOS hacker p0sixninja has also openly stated that he would rather wait for iOS 7 to use his own exploits as well.

There is no way to downgrade the firmware of an iPhone 5 at this point in time, so if you're happily jailbroken, stay at the firmware you are at. If not, feel free to update.

And wait for the person who was to lazy to read the article to say "when will the jail break be out?" Or "can I jailbreak this if I update?"

Or is it Apples attempt to beat/mess with the jailbreakers even before 7.0 is released.... lol

With 7.0 being released soon, why bother? Haven't had or even heard of an issue with speaker that I am aware of.

ahhhh, nice one boys, a battle of who has the biggest pole.

So I see this still doesn't fix the slow wifi speeds! What the heck are they thinking. Most the the world have older routers. Can't even use wifi to download apps. Horrible slow!

What slow wifi speeds? If you have an old router that is limiting your speeds, how is that Apples fault? I just ran Speedtest.net's app on my iPhone 5 and got 57Mbps down and 38Mbps up. That is not limited by my wifi which is a N900 series. All current Apple devices support a/b/g/n wifi in both 2.4 and 5.0 frequencies. If you want anything better than that you would be looking at 802.11ac which 99% of devices don't support yet.

7.0 isn't even in beta yet, gang. They're not even sure it'll be ready for 5S. And PosixNinja has all exploits needed for a 7.0 JB ready to go and under wraps ( if the rumor that ionic blabbed the exploits publicly is false)..

Nice explanation but too techy - even for the avid jail breaker. What they need to do is go to BestBuy and get a "dual band" N router. Then their home wifi will be screamin' again!! I think DOCSIS 3.0 is still the standard for their modem for fastest thru. Right?

Unless you are on dial up the only thing limiting your speed would be your ISP. Even older routers support 54Mbps. In my case having a 54Mbps wifi connection could theoretically limit my Internet speeds because I can test and get as high as 62 Mbps on a 450Mbps wifi connection. The iPhone 5's will support up to 150Mbps over wifi. This not something that an iOS update can change because it is a hardware limitation.
