  • App War Wednesday: TuneIn Radio vs PocketTunes

A new feature we will be bringing every Wednesday is "App War Wednesdays". Two Apps will duke it out, comparing features and designs, with only one coming out as the Winner. No boring long reviews, just right down to the basics. We will cover an AppStore battle, and I hope to add some Jailbreak App brawls. Suggest an App War here.

    TuneIn Radio
    Price: $1.99
    Version: 1.6.3
    More Information

TuneIn Radio features both local and international radio stations, including the AM/FM stations, something which many apps leave out, such as Shoutcast. Comes with support for iOS 4 Multitasking. At he price of only $1.99, it sounds like a great deal.

This app, although not exactly visually appealing, is designed extremely well. With five tabs across the bottom giving you the options to see Bookmarks, Browse, Record, Account Settings, and the ability to surf the web, it's nearly impossible to get lost. What's nice is the feature to choose "Local Radio Stations" and based on your location via GPS, it will list local radio stations, and you'll be surprised at how many are listed. You don't have to go far, as by default, your brought to the listings and one of the first buttons is "Local Station". Navigation is extremely easy and the play controls are identical to that of the iPod controls. To top it all off, there is very little lag, and the App runs incredibly smooth. What's even better is it supports iOS 4 Multitasking, so it can run in the background. You can even do a timed recording of a station with TuneIn, and also go back up to 30 minutes in what you've been streaming.

    Ease Of Use: 5/5
    iOS 4 and Multitasking: Yes
Content Value: Worth the Asking Price.
    Design: 3/5
    Speed: 5/5
    Overall: 4/5

Check the comparison chart below for more details.

    Pocket Tunes
    Price: $6.99
    Version: 5.5.5
    More Information

Pocket Tunes is a more souped up version of something like TuneIn Radio, featuring a more graphical interface and design. While it seems that Pocket Tunes has more radio stations to select from (although the details say different), it's not nearly as easy/convenient to use as TuneIn Radio. Because of the extra graphical user interface design, and a huge radio list, there are some speed issues that arise (I'm using an iPhone 3GS), causing some load times to take longer than normal, granted a lot more is going on. Pocket tunes features both local and international radio stations, however the list is refreshed every time you open the app, causing some delays.

Although it comes with a little more spunk, I have found it hard to justify the cost when something like TuneIn does almost the exact same thing without the fuss.

    Ease Of Use: 4/5
    iOS 4 and Multitasking: Yes
Content Value: A little pricey in comparison
    Design: 4/5
    Speed: 3/5
    Overall: 3/5

    The Breakdown:

Now lets take a look at who wins this battle by comparing specific features.

There you have it. Clearly, at the cost of $1.99, TuneIn Radio is a strong winner in today's App War.

If I had Sirius PocketTunes would be ideal, but since I have cancelled my Sirius, I find that TuneIn radio still outweighs in value considering the cost of the App as well.

In order to stream sirius you also have the $2.99 MONTHLY fee from Sirius direct to enable internet radio.

Most of those type of apps don't. I stream Shoutcast over 3G all the time. It would be weird for a radio app to be wifi-only.

That is not true. I have a lifetime subscription and don't pay a monthly fee to stream Sirius on my phone with Pocket Tunes.

Hmm... I know if I listen to it on Sirius.com or directly on the Sirius App it didn't work until I added the $2.99 internet fee.

Very informative and fun article. I really thought one of the "big three" (Slacker, last.fm and Pandora) did radio, but I can't seem to find that option at a glance. Keep it up!

It is an additional $124 on top of your regular contract fee's! Screw that! I only pay $77 a year for the everything package (obviously not "everything" since it doesn't include internet radio)

I use Wunder Radio. It's a little bit more expensive, but it's the only one I could find that has a particular radio station.

Both these apps look great, but does anyone use WunderRadio?
I use it over the EDGE sometimes and it works great.

WunderRadio is the best for all local & non local channels and beyond. i think it was $5.99. but well worth it. also iOS4 supported.

the interface is much nicer looking to navigate with the tunin radio vs pocket tunes. however i hate cheesy app icons and i think i would buy pocket tunes just because tunins flaky icon

Siriusxm on pocket tunes. Howard stern. Automatic winner. And I don't listen to regular radio( cause I'm not lame) , but it has every channel in the country.

      First, it's 2.99 x 12 which is < $36 a year for Premium internet for existing subscribers.

If you don't want Premium internet, then it is free to listen on the internet if you have a radio subscription.

The $124 is only for those that do not have an existing radio subscription and only want internet, so it is not "on top of your regular contract fees."
