  • China Unicom Rolls Out Their Own Solution to 'Antennagate'

As China Unicom prepares to introduce the iPhone 4 to the world's largest mobile population next month, officials in China are under no illusions about the handset's somewhat troubled past regarding the so-called "Death Grip" in places where the iPhone 4 is currently available and already in widespread use.

As a result, the Chinese carrier announced that it will take special steps to address "Antennagate" in China when the device hits consumers in a matter of days. But it doesn't appear that China Unicom is thinking outside the box in terms of proposing a viable preemptive solution to curbing the dropped call phenomenon that delivered the worst PR black eye to Apple in the Cupertino-based company's long and storied history.

When the iPhone 4 officially launches on September 16th, China Unicom is promising a "free gift" to come with the purchase of the popular device. Any guesses as to what it may be? If you speculated that it might be a free case, you would be right. Although it isn't yet clear if the "free gift" will be immediately included with the iPhone 4 at the point of purchase or shipped later, China Unicom isn't taking any chances with "Antennagate."

The huge Chinese carrier likely wants a smooth arrival for the iPhone 4 and a positive consumer response to all things Apple, as China Unicom is expected to roll out the iPad not long after the iPhone 4 is released.

I think it sucks that everyone has to pick up Apple's slack and find a solution to their own problem, while they're sitting in their high chairs smoking cigars with the money rolling in

Yeah my wife is too. I'm not sure which one she picked. I know I got my free bumper in what seemed like only a week or so...

You mean 3% And that is 97% coverage with EDGE only. I live in Michigan and there aren't too many cities WITH 3G period. I would bet AT&T 3G is some ridiculously low percentage coverage. In the low teens...if that.

You know it is funny, I ask a simple question about the china rollout and the fanboys come out in droves to whine about the idea of a CDMA iPhone.

Yes I have a Ip4 through AT&T. I would like to see another major carrier have it though. Then we would see some competive pricing in the US market. If you don't want that to happen then you must either be stupid, or live a very charmed life where money has no effect on you.

Be realistic. If Verizon had that many iPhones on their network don't you think they'd be brought to their knees as well? Maybe not as bad as AT&T but it isn't some oasis of unlimited bandwith and guaranteed service everywhere with Rev. A speeds all the time. That much data usage on ANY network is crippling to a telecommunications company.
if verizon got iphone then it would take some iphone users off the network freeing it up some and verizon LTE 4g network is coming out the same time verizon is suppose to get iphone in january

You act like verizon is cheaper than AT&T? They may not have the best coverage but all smartphones are expensive as far as monthly plans so I am not arguing that I just wish they would make other gsm models that were compatible with tmobiles 3G network.

I think you missed my point completely. Let me be clearer about this. I don't really care what other carrier gets the iphone, as long as someone else has it so it will bring down cost due to competitive pricing. It's called good old fashion economics...

How come Apple first went to Verizon to ask for the exclusive contract for the first iphone?
