  • Nokia Ramps Up Efforts to Compete with App Store

    In what proves to be yet another indication of Nokia's eagerness to compete with Apple in the booming app marketplace, the struggling phone maker is ramping up efforts to boost software development for the Ovi platform by sweetened the pot for developers so to speak. Today it was announced that Nokia is purchasing analytics firm Motally.

    "The Finnish company says the acquisition Friday underscores its attempt to improve mobile Web browsing analytics for software developers of its Internet services, that are struggling to match competitor Apple Inc.," the AP reported in its coverage of Nokia's announcement early Friday. The move strikes many analysts as Nokia's latest and borderline desperate attempt to bolster the Ovi platform, which gives mobilephone users access to a wide range of downloads, including music, games, and maps.

    Nokia says the systems of San Francisco-based Motally enable software developers to better connect with customers and improve the development of their applications. Privately held Motally was founded in 2008 and has eight employees.
    Although Apple has invested heavily in iAd to keep devs happy and attract the newest and brightest in the business to the iOS platform, Apple cannot presently boast of a similar mobile analytics firm in the fold. Effectively, Nokia gained "one-up" on Apple with this acquisition, even though it isn't yet entirely clear if the move will do anything significant to achieve the lofty and uphill goals of Nokia in the app space.

      Really no clue where you get those figures from zong because I have never heard that anywhere on any site before and I find it hard to believe that nokia has that much marketshare when it comes to smartphones. Nokia needs to stick to making standard phones because there done in the smartphone area. They will get crushed by google and are no competition for android or ios

      While Nokia might outsell in terms of numbers Symbian is a dying OS and Nokia are struggling to replace it.
      Nokia are, unfortunately, struggling.

      Just because the iPhone is big in the US, doesn't mean it's big everywhere, Nokia is still worldwide dominant. The reason Nokia reminds some of you of old phones is because they invented the first cellphone, and have been in the market the longest. They might not be on top software wise, but hardware wise I would take it over an iPhone anyday. Even their lower end phones have such good build quality.
      Also, hasn't anyone heard of maemo? Nokia is staying with symbian only because they have invested so much in it and want to take it even farther, but I think maemo is the future of Nokia. It's 100% open source unlike android. Coming from a Nokia n900, I think maemo is the best mobile OS out there by far, all it needs is more support and a bigger community and you will see more apps.

      Maemo was supposed to replace the aging Symbian - but it was a flop and I think they have abandoned it.
      Nokia were one of the first which is why there are so many Nokia handsets but they are all low end. The way forward for high end Smartphones (I'm sure Nokia will keep the low end and non SmartPhone market) is Apple with Android snapping at it's heels ready to overtake.

      Maemo was never meant to replace symbian, and I don't understand why everyone assumes that. They said themselves that they will continue symbian and farther development of maemo. They haven't abandonded it either, they just changed the project name to meego.
      Also, not all Nokia phones are low end. How can you say the n900 is low end? What does the iPhone have that the n900 doesn't?

      Are you being serious?
      Nokia realized that Symbian was aging and not a modern OS and beyond it's sell by date. While I may not have been strictly accurate saying Maemo was meant to replace Symbian, what I shouyld have said was replace symbian for their top end SmartPhones, they will keep Symbian for the time being on lower end models and still develop it for that market.
      Maemo was a flop - there aren't many industry analysts that think otherwise. Re-branding it as Meego is more to distance itself from teh disaster that was Maemo, they have spent to much on it to abbandon it completely and will continue and hopefully one day come up with a decent OS.
      To ask "What does the iPhone have that the n900 doesn't?" just goes to show you have not used both. After all, what does a Rolls Royce have that a Ford Mondeo doesn't. Try both and you will find out.
      At the moment, the only serious competitor to the iPhone is Android, and I don't believe it's there yet.
      I have had many phones over the years and many operating systems, I always try and get the best and have no loyalty to anyone but after considering all the options I have decided that, despite the price, the iPhone 4 is the only thing to replace my 3G.
      If you think differently then your criteria for a good SmartPhone must be vastly different from mine.

      I have tried both, I have an iPhone 4 now. It looks like you haven't tried both since you're the one who can't tell the differences. Other than software, the iPhone has no advantage over the n900 other than the capacitive vs resistive debate. Even the retina display is not too much higher than the n900's 800 by 600 display. In fact, I think the n900 has the advantages.
      Also, can you please post links to the sites where you got the information that nokia is abandoning maemo. Also, which analysists declared maemo a flop? Was that fact or opinion? Not that I don't believe you, it's just that I've never heard of this before.
      And your right, it is about personal preferences but that doesn't mean you can turn ur opinions into facts.
