  • Apple Gives AppGratis The Boot from App Store

Apple is showing no gratitude to AppGratis, the fast-growing daily deal app and app discovery service.

Although details regarding the exact problem between Apple and AppGratis are still emerging, the initial logical suspicion - that Apple’s developer guidelines may have caused the unceremonious app ouster - appears correct.

On Sunday, Apple dumped the app from its iTunes App Store and AllThingsD insists that the dismissal was born of the app's circumvention of App Store rules preventing applications promoting other apps and direct marketing.

The developer guidelines in question state that “apps that display apps other than your own for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected.”

Apple confirmed to AllThingsD Monday that it removed AppGratis from the App Store for violating clause 2.25. But it said that the app also violated clause 5.6 as well.
Clause 5.6 dictates that apps "cannot use Push Notifications to send advertising, promotions, or direct marketing of any kind."

If and how AppGratis can change its model for the sake of re-entry into the App Store is anyone's guess for now.

There are plenty of other better places to go for app discounts.

App deals should be pushed as subscribed news, not deals. App devs were probably paying for placement/promotion, so it really wasn't unbiased "news."

Well it's not that I have favorites because of this app, it's just the fact that Fapple shouldn't really care about stuff like this. There are hundreds of these apps and ones like this that are the best at it are the ones that get the boot but not the crappy ones.

The real issue is that there was no cashflow from AppGratis to Apple for reviews/promotions, whereas the iAds displayed in games are purchased promotions. As such, Apple gets paid to show you about other games. Not so with AppGratis. They just need to come over to the dark side! Or make a webapp...

I think ads for other apps within any app should disappear, iAd or not.

I don't know about you guys but I wouldn't want to receive push notifications of ads. That's one major thing I hate about Android. My mom's Galaxy S III is always receiving ads for other apps in the form of notifications. I'd rather it be a pop up during the launch of an app, not a push notification that you may receive at any time during any app.

Most of their deals are games, trials and partial apps that you need to buy upgrades.

i wouldn't want to post any advertisement for myself in a forum that would do me no good- so I'm not even going to bother trying to solicit my landscaping business on here at all- even if I would beat any price with restrictions to my local area...

I wonder if AppsGoneFree will get the boot too. It's essentially the same type of app.

don't be so naive., your mom's S3 is receiving push notifications because of all the garbage apps she's installed on it. apps with push notifications usually allow you to turn off notifications--if Not uninstall the app.

besides, there are plenty of apps in the app store that do the same thing. Talking Tom, Kick the Buddy. those apps push notify me at least once a day and they wont stop.

BAHAAHAHAHHA apple is like a corrupt plutocrat... it makes convenient rules and regulation that it laxly enforces to only the extent that it's beneficial to itself. And that's it.

So many apps break this clause of apple's rules and apple's other rules in general. The only difference here is that apple isn't making money off of it. If apps start to realize they can get more publicity through appgratis than apple's expensive iAds, they'll go to appgratis. Apple doesn't like competition or freedom in its little iOS dictatorship. I think that should be pretty apparent now.

Apple likes to eat the entire cake. It HURTS them to see others succeed.

And I think it's actually pointing people to USE the App Store MORE!

Doesn't a large majority of apps violate both clauses stated here already? It seems like every app I open has ads for more apps from the same dev inside it, and push notifications only serve to get you to open the app back up and buy something inside it or buy another app.
