  • Facebook Announcement is a 'Home' Run for Android

For days, the blogosphere has buzzed with rumors in anticipation of Facebook's scheduled announcement this week. On Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg led a company presentation with the tech and social media worlds closely watching.

Although expectations for today's event were all over the map, the reason Zuckerberg rounded up our attention today was to introduce “Home,” a new family of Android apps for devices powered by Google’s popular mobile operating system.

Home isn’t a phone or operating system, and it’s also more than just an app. Home is a completely new experience that lets you see the world through people, not apps.
In a nutshell, Facebook’s new offering replaces the standard interface on an Android phone, switching up the appearance and function of the device for better personalization. Basically, Android-powered smartphones now have the option of being more Facebook-centric.

“What would it feel like,” Zuckerberg asked, “if our phones were designed around people instead of apps?”

Facebook Home largely answers that question. Home allows users to “see the latest content shared by their friends on the lock screen of their phones," reads a first-hand review from Salvador Rodriguez of the LA Times. "Friends’ photos and status updates appear, and users can swipe left and right to see more content. Users can also ‘like’ or comment on the content straight from the screen, which Facebook calls the Cover Feed.”

Facebook Home will be available this month for Android users with the latest version of the Facebook app. Afterwards, Facebook Home will be updated each month. The introduction of Home for Android tablets is also planned for the near future.

I agree it's good for that but all the rest of the content that used to show in my Newsfeed etc was just OTT!

      Hence why I deactivated it...

Society needs to wake up IMO & not be so reliant/user heavy on it.

Are you high or just stupid? If you knew anything about what Facebook home is you would know that it effectively removes the "springboard" and replaces your home screen with a app folder. It also totally obliterates the lock screen and turns it into a completely insecure newsfeed. Finally it replaces the messages app with Facebook messages integrated with SMS. If you think apple would give up this much ground to Facebook your insane. Not to mention the fact that Facebook Home is just completely confusing, and is move like a web page then an os.

that's what I was thinking when I saw this on the news a little while ago. there's no way apple will allow any companies app to replace anything on an iPhone. too bad for iOS users who may want this or any other app.

As an introvert it would feel sucky, Mark.

Lmmfao!!! Hahahahhahahahah who caaarrrreeeesssssss!? Lmao seriously? Smmfh. This just sounds like a ram hogging, battery devouring, constant notification tone chiming, never ending vibration creating, phone screen cluttering, piece of useless crap. Granted people will use it because its available. But that will last a whole 2 days before the user deactivates 9/10 features of it lol. This is a certified knee slapper.

Just another way for people on Facebook to spam the crap out of our phone. Why Would I want all that junk popping up all over my phone all day.

This app is made for 12-17 year old girls

Does not appeal to me at all.

Apple would never allow Facebook to take over the whole user experience like that. The integration we've got now might very well be the most FB integration we'll ever get.
