  • Facebook Announcement is a 'Home' Run for Android

For days, the blogosphere has buzzed with rumors in anticipation of Facebook's scheduled announcement this week. On Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg led a company presentation with the tech and social media worlds closely watching.

Although expectations for today's event were all over the map, the reason Zuckerberg rounded up our attention today was to introduce “Home,” a new family of Android apps for devices powered by Google’s popular mobile operating system.

Home isn’t a phone or operating system, and it’s also more than just an app. Home is a completely new experience that lets you see the world through people, not apps.
In a nutshell, Facebook’s new offering replaces the standard interface on an Android phone, switching up the appearance and function of the device for better personalization. Basically, Android-powered smartphones now have the option of being more Facebook-centric.

“What would it feel like,” Zuckerberg asked, “if our phones were designed around people instead of apps?”

Facebook Home largely answers that question. Home allows users to “see the latest content shared by their friends on the lock screen of their phones," reads a first-hand review from Salvador Rodriguez of the LA Times. "Friends’ photos and status updates appear, and users can swipe left and right to see more content. Users can also ‘like’ or comment on the content straight from the screen, which Facebook calls the Cover Feed.”

Facebook Home will be available this month for Android users with the latest version of the Facebook app. Afterwards, Facebook Home will be updated each month. The introduction of Home for Android tablets is also planned for the near future.

So isn't the relevant question why is it exclusive to Android? Apple just won't play nice or what?

How would it run on iOS?
Plus, apple would never give up that much control of iOS...

Well they are going to have to start because the more cool things like this come out for droids and not iphones will just make more people switch. Apple can try to make all the rules but eventually people will just stop playing the game. Personally I can live without this though. Jailbreaking still trumps FB Home

Doesn't sound to appealing even if it was for iOS ...

This is just stupid IMHO! LMAO Tho i don't have to worry about it since i have a iPhone 5. But still even if i had a Android phone i wouldn't want it. I wouldn't care to have my phone showing my life style nor do i care to know what every Tom,**** and Harry is doing on FB. Maybe for a teenager! but my life isn't wrapped around FB or depend on it!

It would probably eat your RAM for breakfast and your battery for dinner if it ever did come on iOS lol

This is the proverbial fork in the road, folks, IMHO. My phone is about my business, hence; email, calls, calendar and contacts. iPhone suits that just fine. If your phone is about YOU, maybe this is the cat's *****. Not for me.

I said the other day that whatever Facebook announces pretty much isn't that interesting. After this announcement? Yawn...

When I want to see pictures of my friends' kids and sh1t I'll open the Facebook app.

Yeah, not that interested in it also. If i wanted to have facebook be the first thing i see i would set it up using Sense 5 Blinkfeed system. This reminds me of the Helio phone

So it's a FB app that can be used on the lock screen. Big deal. I'm sure some people will find it useful, or even love it, but it really isn't the game changer they are trying to make it out to be.

Sound like a lot of people who don't have an android device are trying to dog this idea like its not a good one. You guys know this is pretty cool. Seeing that I use android and iOS, I can't wait!

That's because it's not a good idea. And, I use the Droid DNA as my primary phone so I use Android.

Its not about having a android device or not!! even if i had one i would still NOT use this!!! were just all saying is FB doesn't run OUR lives and doesn't care to have IT on OUR phones 24/7 seeing what every TOM, Judy, and Harry is doing all the time. As someone else put it? When i want to post or see something? Then open up the app or goto the website!

So it's a Facebook widget. Strictly for 14year olds. Facebook is an annoying distraction at the best of times...this sounds like hell.
