  • TinyUmbrella Updated - Save Your SHSH Files!
With the new iOS 4.1 update around the corner, it is more important than ever to back up your SHSH files to ensure that you will be able to downgrade to 4.0 after the new update has been released.

TinyUmbrella, a handy application which allows you to both save your SHSH files and also use them to downgrade, isn't new - but it has been updated with performance improvements and a nice big GUI upgrade. More information on the improvements and the new features can be found at the developers blog, here. With 4.1 right around the corner, we figured now's a good time to remind everyone.

A recent tweet from @planetbeing stresses the importance to back up your SHSH Blobs before updating to the new 4.1 firmware.

Saving your SHSH Blobs using TinyUmbrella is very easy, and takes hardly any time at all. One of the advantages of using TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH is that it bypasses the need for a jailbroken device. Also, when downgrading a device, TinyUmbrella sets up its own virtual server on your machine, and tells iTunes to connect to it via your hosts file. All this is automated and separate from the Cydia server, making it a lot simpler to downgrade. Because your SHSH files are saved locally, you may also back them up yourself, as oppose to them being stored on a server somewhere where you can't access them.

TinyUmbrella can be downloaded from here.

In cydia you can save as low of firmware as you were on/have been on when you jailbreak and save in cydia. I'm guessing tinyumbrella is different.

I'm still having trouble running tiny umbrella on OSX. It doesn't download as a .dmg for me to copy to my desktop. it downloads as a .app and when I try to open it it just bounces in my dock for a while then does nothing.

To accidentally update your fw and being unlocked on tmobile is a timely thing to do. It takes at least 10 mins to first download the new fw then plug the phone in to erase the unlock. Kinda hard to believe someone would do this.

TinyUmbrella can grab those older ecid shshs from Cydia and you can use them from within Tiny.

that tuturiol someone linked uses umbrella 80, and says the files are hidden ( I did do a search for hidden files but no luck) but no apparently there is a blue print saying open hideen files or something , to see the shsh files and copy a backup, I might try this tonight as it wasn't on version 54
use a app called houdini.app it shows the hidden files or you could use terminal.

yes when you run umbrella there is a link that says show shsh files

does this not work for anyone else? the app just hangs on processing shsh request.... and never finishes, never errors. nothing. just stays there. someone else on the blog says they have the same problem. this is on an iphone4.

Figured that out, had to turn off open safe files. Now when I copy the .dmg to my desktop then open it from there. The icon still just bounces in my dock then does nothing.

I downloaded and ran TU and saved my SHSH succesfully. After i googled how to backup from SHSH just in case and all the guides i read said i had to patch my "Hosts" file at C>Windows>System32>Drivers>Etc>Hosts. Do i still have to do that? And if i do, am i done after that or are there some more steps.

TU takes care of this automatically when you provide your system password.

I had this issue as well...You before you open up the DL'ed file you must
first drag it into your Applications Folder...then click in input your Mac security password...it'll open then.

I didn't give a password, but TU says my iPod touch 2g could be restored to 4.0 but since main of acc (administrator) doesn't have a password it makes sense

Tried that, but with a different program, it does show other hidden files nothing to do with umbrella or shsh, but the shsh file are still not showing up anywhere

You don't have to upgrade to 4 to save the blobs for 4.
