  • TinyUmbrella Updated - Save Your SHSH Files!
With the new iOS 4.1 update around the corner, it is more important than ever to back up your SHSH files to ensure that you will be able to downgrade to 4.0 after the new update has been released.

TinyUmbrella, a handy application which allows you to both save your SHSH files and also use them to downgrade, isn't new - but it has been updated with performance improvements and a nice big GUI upgrade. More information on the improvements and the new features can be found at the developers blog, here. With 4.1 right around the corner, we figured now's a good time to remind everyone.

A recent tweet from @planetbeing stresses the importance to back up your SHSH Blobs before updating to the new 4.1 firmware.

Saving your SHSH Blobs using TinyUmbrella is very easy, and takes hardly any time at all. One of the advantages of using TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH is that it bypasses the need for a jailbroken device. Also, when downgrading a device, TinyUmbrella sets up its own virtual server on your machine, and tells iTunes to connect to it via your hosts file. All this is automated and separate from the Cydia server, making it a lot simpler to downgrade. Because your SHSH files are saved locally, you may also back them up yourself, as oppose to them being stored on a server somewhere where you can't access them.

TinyUmbrella can be downloaded from here.

Im on 3.1.2 and have successfully saved 3.1 upto 4.0 blobs

Plugin your device and open Umbrella. It should automatically pickup your device and iOS. Click on advanced options and change the iOS for which blob you want to save. I started from 4.0 clicked save, 3.1.3 clicked save, 3.1.2 clicked save, 3.1 clicked save. Each time you save a blob it will be a different file so you will not overwrite anything.

      Hope this helps!!

Unfortunately, Apple are no longer signing SHSH for any other firmware besides 4.0.1 (they may still be signing 4.0 for a short time) so even though you thought you had saved 3.1.x blobs they will not work.

I advise you save 4.0 and 4.0.1 blobs.

I have saved 4.0 from Cydia. Does this mean i have to save them from Apple??

EDIT- Apple will not allow me to save 4.0 but Cydia will??

How do i save 4.0.1 blob when tinyumbrella does not have an option for it??

I had the shsh backed up for all my iPhones including my Iphone4. I had the Proximity sensor problem and it was bugging the crap outa me so I called apple care and they sent me a new iphone4. Looks the same as the other one did and has IOS4, hasnt been updated to 4.01

      Here,s what I get from TU 4.00.80
Baseband: 01.59.00 - ICE_2_6 07/16/2010 12:07:43.830 TSS Server Started! 07/16/2010 12:07:43.830 TSS Accepting connections... 07/16/2010 12:07:43.830 Processing SHSH Request... 07/16/2010 12:07:43.830 Asking CYDIA for SHSH blobs for iPhone4 4.0 (8A293)... 07/16/2010 12:07:43.830 This device isn't eligible for the requested build. 07/16/2010 12:07:43.830 CYDIA DOES NOT HAVE YOUR SHSH FOR iPhone4 4.0 (8A293) THERE IS NO WAY FOR YOU TO GET THEM. SORRY. YOU ARE JUST TOO LATE.

Is there any way to work round this issue? I have tried with host file modified and original.

I don't even update with apple anymore. I wait until the dev team has a new release and then I update. Apple sucks at what they do compared to the dev team here at modmyi

just curious if I missed the shsh backup should I update to 4.0.1 then and do it? Or do what I have been and keep my iphone and computer in their seperate corners until the dev team releases a jailbreak?

      Stupid me didn't do it in a timely manner and missed it >.<;;

Oh and just have to mention the bumper thing ... great plan apple ... I may as well put duct tape on my new phone. Great fix.

I just found out the importance of backing up my shsh blobs
I used spirit to jailbreak my 3GS
That worked fine but then I had to do a restore
I thought I had backed up my blobs with cydia
But now can't seem to find them

Just out of curiosity does anyone know why there's a file size difference if you save an ssh using apple and then using cydia in Tinytss.. for my Iphone 4 one is 59.4 if requested from cydia the other is 68.5 if requested from apple..

probably a stupid questions but I have already backed up the shsh blobs from both of my iPhone 4's. How ever I had to replace the sim in one of those phones do I have to back up the phone again since I changed the sim or does that even matter. Any info will be helpful....

Nope, the SHSH is tied to your hardware. No reason to get them again, you're good.

You should be fine, just do what you always do and update when the Dev Team says it's okay to do so. You should be alright even if you go to 4.0.1 because nothing changed except for the signal bars calculation.
