  • [Guide] How To Downgrade iOS 4 : iPhone 3GS

In the flurry of upgrades and jailbreak tools, many may have come to the realization that they are not yet ready for iOS 4 for various reasons, wether it be a new bootrom, or you simply miss your Jailbroken apps from Cydia, this guide will help you downgrade your recent update to iOS 4 back to 3.1.x. While it is highly recommended to restore to 3.1.2, some of you may not have that option, but only use 3.1.3 as a last resort. However, it is important to note that if you are downgrading, in order to upgrade to iOS 4 JB, you MUST be on 3.1.2. The only jailbreak for 3.1.3 is Spirit, which is NOT compatible for upgrading to iOS 4 Jailbroken.

Before we even get started, you must have your SHSH blobs on file with Saurik's server. You can tell if you have this by opening cydia and seeing a message similar to this:

If you are 100% sure you have this message, and recall choosing the "Make My Life Easier" option when you first launched Cydia, then it's time to proceed. If you unfortunately do not have these saved, and are already on iOS 4, then there is nothing you can do.

Ok, so you made it past the hump. You have SHSH blobs on file via Saurik's Cydia server, which means your going to be able to downgrade just fine. The next question is, which firmware would you like to downgrade to. In my case, I don't have SHSH blobs on file for 3.1.2, so I will be downgrading to 3.1.3 instead.

Grab your stock firmware from the links provided at the end of this thread. Make sure you are using the one you have SHSH blobs on file for.

Now that we've got this far, its time to begin:

Note: This guide ONLY applies to the 3GS

Step 1: Modify the Hosts file

In order to trick iTunes into connecting to Saurik's server instead of Apple, we need to modify the hosts files. This applies to both Windows and Mac users. By doing this, we are able to get iTunes to think that our device is eligible for a downgrade. Normally when a new firmware is released, the older firmwares are no longer signed by Apple, thus preventing downgrading, but by connecting to Saurik's server, we bypass this issue.
    1a: Modifying Windows Hosts file

Browse to Windows\System32\drivers\etc\. Inside this directory you should be able to find a file named "Hosts". Open this in Notepad and add the following line to the bottom.

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Due to some restrictions on Windows you may have to create a copy of this file on your desktop and then drag and drop it to replace.

    1b: Modifying Mac Hosts File

The same idea as windows here, only in a different location. On your Mac, Open Finder, and choose Go from the toolbar, and then Go To Folder. Type in the following: etc/ .

This folder should pop up, and inside you'll see the hosts file. Open this file with textedit and add the following line to the bottom.

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    Save the file.

    2: Install Firmware Manually

Now you can launch iTunes, shift click, or ctrl click, Restore, choose your firmware, and the downgrade begins. Some of you may not have any problems from here, but some of you will end up in recovery mode by the end of it. Do not worry, this is normal. Now we just need to force the phone out of recovery mode.

    3: Fix Recovery Boot Loop

In our case, I used iReb to easily fix the recovery boot method. This is of course on Windows, but you can also use many of the methods out there to fix the recovery loop. If you need further help with this, post a reply.

    4: Welcome Back to 3.1.x.

Your back. Now you can patiently wait for further development on iOS 4 in the meantime and have all your fun apps back. Hope this helps everyone. I Will add photos shortly.

yeah ireb and irecovery aren't working at all. I tried getting blackra1n to just stop the damn recovery loop and it did, but then I wasn't able to make any phone calls. My phone kept saying no service.

Now im just upgrading to 4.0 to hopefully fix it.

      hey guys, please help me!

i have a 3GS old bootrom+3.1.3+spirit. I have the green line on cydia homepage, but only 3.1.3: "The device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.3"

So clould be I dont saved the 3.1.2 on saurik's server when my phone was in 3.0.1?

BEcause iTunes on the SHIFT+Restore method write an error message: "The iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

I made the host file addon of course

Maybe I can olny downgrade to 3.1.3? But my question is: it is possible to upgrade to custom Jailbroked sn0wbreeze 4.0 after i downgraded to 3.1.3? Or its possible only from 3.1.2 downgrade?

      PLease HELP Me!!!

I just wanted to verify that restoring from 4.0 non jailbroken to 3.1.2 JB blackra1ned then back to 4.0 with a JB from sn0wbreeze works 100% however don't try shift + Check for Update, it gave me error 17. Use Shift + Restore like it says to :/

I had my iPhone replaced at the Apple store with a new 3Gs like 3-4 months ago, 3.1.3 already installed on it. I had to use spirit to jailbreak since I couldn't downgrade to 3.1.2 When I did, after all the spirit rush, Cydia told me that my SHSH was on file, even though I don't remember clicking it. Now my iphone is on 4.0, old bootrom. I have tried downgrading to 3.1.2 and 3.1.3, both give me error 3194 in iTunes. I edited the hosts file and everything. Any ideas why I'm getting the error?

      Thanks

Also getting error 3194 in iTunes when trying to restore stock 3.1.2 firmware.

      - old model iPhone 3GS (got it in July 2009)
      - never been on firmware 3.1.3
      - previously jailbroken on 3.1.2
      - Cydia said I had the SHSH on file
      - currently running stock 4.0
      - running iTunes 9.2
      - edited hosts file exactly as per this guide
      - shift + click Restore > stock 3.1.2 IPSW file > error 3194
      - error 3194 comes up whether done in regular mode or recovery mode

I haven't tried to restore 3.1.3, but I see no reason to. This iPhone has never been on firmware 3.1.3. Went directly from jailbroken 3.1.2 to stock 4.0. Now trying to downgrade to stock 3.1.2 in order to re-JB 3.1.2, then upgrade to JB 4.0.

I had to restore my 3GS before I was gonna sell it but in doing so i was forced to upgrade to iOS4. Now the person didnt want it because it needs to be unlocked for tmobile. My question is: The sim card for the 3GS is deactivated now since Im now on my iphone4. Im pretty sure i have that file backed up on cydia. So can i still do this through wifi even if the sim card dont work anymore.Thanks.

Help. Can anyone tell me how to get my "SHSH blobs" on file with Saurik's server? Or what SHSH blobs are? I'm jailbroken and I wanna get things backed up in case the phone has issues or I ever upgrade (and then wanna downgrade) and I'm confused as to where to start. Help?

Sim card has nothing to do with downgrading. If you have the SHSH on saurik server, then u can downgrade, you won't be able to activate since u dont have a sim, but that's not needed cuz blackra1n will hacktivate it and then u can unlock or upgrade to jailbroken 4.0

Ok, question. Everywhere I read it says if you have iPhone 3g you don't need to do anything special but downgrade. I did this but one big problem, I got no service. Even though I have AT&T I have to use BLACKSNOW?

Just an FYI for allot of people I see posting the same issue here as I just found this out myself yesterday. If you are downloading your firmwares with IE and they are getting saved as zip files and then even when you unzip Snowbreeze and other apps still cant see them INSTALL FIREFOX and download the firmware AGAIN with that browser. It leaves the firmware files in the proper state and then all works fine.
