  • [Guide] How To Downgrade iOS 4 : iPhone 3GS

In the flurry of upgrades and jailbreak tools, many may have come to the realization that they are not yet ready for iOS 4 for various reasons, wether it be a new bootrom, or you simply miss your Jailbroken apps from Cydia, this guide will help you downgrade your recent update to iOS 4 back to 3.1.x. While it is highly recommended to restore to 3.1.2, some of you may not have that option, but only use 3.1.3 as a last resort. However, it is important to note that if you are downgrading, in order to upgrade to iOS 4 JB, you MUST be on 3.1.2. The only jailbreak for 3.1.3 is Spirit, which is NOT compatible for upgrading to iOS 4 Jailbroken.

Before we even get started, you must have your SHSH blobs on file with Saurik's server. You can tell if you have this by opening cydia and seeing a message similar to this:

If you are 100% sure you have this message, and recall choosing the "Make My Life Easier" option when you first launched Cydia, then it's time to proceed. If you unfortunately do not have these saved, and are already on iOS 4, then there is nothing you can do.

Ok, so you made it past the hump. You have SHSH blobs on file via Saurik's Cydia server, which means your going to be able to downgrade just fine. The next question is, which firmware would you like to downgrade to. In my case, I don't have SHSH blobs on file for 3.1.2, so I will be downgrading to 3.1.3 instead.

Grab your stock firmware from the links provided at the end of this thread. Make sure you are using the one you have SHSH blobs on file for.

Now that we've got this far, its time to begin:

Note: This guide ONLY applies to the 3GS

Step 1: Modify the Hosts file

In order to trick iTunes into connecting to Saurik's server instead of Apple, we need to modify the hosts files. This applies to both Windows and Mac users. By doing this, we are able to get iTunes to think that our device is eligible for a downgrade. Normally when a new firmware is released, the older firmwares are no longer signed by Apple, thus preventing downgrading, but by connecting to Saurik's server, we bypass this issue.
    1a: Modifying Windows Hosts file

Browse to Windows\System32\drivers\etc\. Inside this directory you should be able to find a file named "Hosts". Open this in Notepad and add the following line to the bottom.

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Due to some restrictions on Windows you may have to create a copy of this file on your desktop and then drag and drop it to replace.

    1b: Modifying Mac Hosts File

The same idea as windows here, only in a different location. On your Mac, Open Finder, and choose Go from the toolbar, and then Go To Folder. Type in the following: etc/ .

This folder should pop up, and inside you'll see the hosts file. Open this file with textedit and add the following line to the bottom.

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    Save the file.

    2: Install Firmware Manually

Now you can launch iTunes, shift click, or ctrl click, Restore, choose your firmware, and the downgrade begins. Some of you may not have any problems from here, but some of you will end up in recovery mode by the end of it. Do not worry, this is normal. Now we just need to force the phone out of recovery mode.

    3: Fix Recovery Boot Loop

In our case, I used iReb to easily fix the recovery boot method. This is of course on Windows, but you can also use many of the methods out there to fix the recovery loop. If you need further help with this, post a reply.

    4: Welcome Back to 3.1.x.

Your back. Now you can patiently wait for further development on iOS 4 in the meantime and have all your fun apps back. Hope this helps everyone. I Will add photos shortly.

olivo42 try iclarified but i cant post links

      Also I SOLVED ERROR 1600...

wow im on a roll today

After using snowbreeze to make your custom 4.0 ispw then go to itunes, DO NOT PUT IPHONE IN DFU or RECOVERY MODE. just put your phone in the main page window (the one with lets say the settings icon and winterboard ect...) and go to Itunes and SHIFT+Restore and click the custom ispw 4.0 and VOILA.

NOTE : only works if you have jailbroken 3gs 3.1.2 blackra1n

This fixed my problem! Now, the only downside is that I can only go to 3.1.3

I get the 3194 error if I try 3.1.2, but I never had a chance to save my SHSH of that firmware, as this one came with 3.1.3 on it already.

      Thanks man!

Well I jailbroke my iphone 3gs with spirit so I'm trying to restore it back to 3.1.3(I bought it with 3.1.3 installed so no 3.1.2 for me) and I'm just wondering a few things. I clicked the make my life easier button and it's pending the tss request(I'm assuming that means I can't restore it yet so I'm not) any clue as to how long this will take? Will restoring to 3.1.3 the way you described(backing up via cydia then restoring) keep all my cydia apps, themes, etc.? Or just delete them all?

In case anyone is wondering why I can't just click the restore button it's because iTunes makes me restore and update instead of just restore and I can't update because I jb with spirit.... I'm starting to get really annoyed with spirit btw..

Okay guys, I have a question. And no I'm not stupid so don't go bashing me. I just got my iPhone traded out because I took it in after I updated to iOS4 because I lost data service. They gave me a brand new iPhone 3G[S], that is still model MB and serial before 40s. If I updated it to iOS4 as well am I SOL? Or do I have any options?

If I have a 3GS that has the new bootrom then I am stuck at 3.1.3 correct? I'm not saying that is a bad thing because a lot of cydia apps I use are not fully compatible with 4.0 yet. On my 3GS with the older bootrom I downgraded that from 4.0 to 3.1.2 just because some of the apps I use the most didn't work. I'm 99% sure that if I have a 3GS with the new bootrom it's best to stay on 3.1.3 for now correct?

I have a question. I am trying to find out if I have the new or old bootrom. I tried doing the thing where you plug in your phone while in DFU mode and using System Profiler (Mac) to find what my iBoot number was, but there wasn't anything there except for my serial number and a few other things. Any ideas?

I am also getting an error 1015, I got my 3GS when it first came out.

Its been jail broken since 3.0. I did have it 3.1.2 w blackra1n.

It goes to the restore process and it stops at about 75% and gives the 1015 error.

Anyone know how to get around this?

if you are 100% sure that you have your SHSH blobs saved, and have edited your host file, and are still getting error (3194) try this out...

i was getting that same error over and over again. i went into my c:/windows/system32/drivers/ect folder and cut everything out and pasted it in a new folder on my desktop. leaving only my hosts file in the 'ect' folder. i realized one of my host files was a 'text' file, the other just said 'file'. i only kept the one that was a file. right-clicked, opened with notepad, added my "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com " saved it. and viola. just for shits and giggles, i put the other files back in my 'ect' folder, and got the error (3194) again. i was going nuts with this. hope i helped somebody out at least.

thanks jcasas but I still geting the error message. Maybe I dont have the SHSH blobs on the server. I push the "make my life easier" button when I was on 3.1.2 Im sure. I had on my cydia the green line before 3.1.3 I dont know what i did wrong. I see already, i need to wait till comes out any JB solution for spirit jailbreakers
