  • iPhone Jailbreaking = Job Opportunities

For one tech-savvy student at George Mason University, iPhone jailbreaking has provided a great opportunity to break the bank. Kevin Lee, a senior studying computer science, says he works full-time as an iPhone jailbreaker, earning upwards of $50,000 a year hacking iPhones that belong to his "customers" - a pool that is widening by the week.

From a simple ad on Craigslist to a full-fledged business, Kevin Lee was profiled nationally yesterday in The Washington Post because of his successful and lucrative operation. “To be honest, when I first started, I did it for my friends, myself, but it has snowballed from there,” said Lee. “I was getting five to 10 customers a week, now it’s 30 to 40. I just had one customer from the Mongolian embassy who was moving to the capital of Mongolia, and he wanted to use the iPhone there.”

One has to wonder if all this attention will somehow result in Apple "contacting" Mr. Lee in some fashion about his extracurricular career.

Still, The Washington Post piece went on to detail how the jailbreak industry is "losing its anti-establishment character." One example of this newfound reality is the recent Toyota campaign that offered a free program on Cydia’s store, promoting the company’s Scion sedan.

Adding insight to the piece was MMi co-founder Kyle Matthews: “We’ve seen expansion across the board. The Toyota ad and theme, to me, meant there was a turning of the tides and that jailbreaking is becoming more mainstream,” Kyle said. “The industry just keeps increasing; there are even repair stores that will jailbreak for you.”

Say he charges $10 per Jailbreak.

He'd have to JailBreak 14 devices per day including weekends in order to pull this off, it's possible, but I'm just a little sceptical about his claim.

$30 a shot + about 4 a day. $30 sounds about right ($25-$35 range). Not out of reach, especially if he charges more for an unlock or screen repair or setup or....

I am very aware that the software is not being sold. This was just my opinion on the subject, no big deal. He did find a VERY EASY way to make money with the already available tools, which, in my opinion anyone that has the time and effort to use the tools could do. This is why I don`t categorize this as being a "smart kid". Like I said, this is just MY opinion.

Yep I guess he could pull off 50K/year, I was just surprised that there are that many people who want their device JailBroken yet aren't able to do it themselves...

It's pretty easy to do these days.

Lots of college students at his college, I guess.

Or maybe he's also selling to townies.

And, from these forums, we can see how easy it is for some and how hard it is for others. Thirty buck or so for a JB is not a lot.

I'm doing a friend's new phone for free this weekend (she has to add the stuff I won't - that which name we don't speak here), but then I'm not trying to make a business out of it.

It's like doing your taxes you can do
It yourself but some people pay an expert to do it just because they don't have the knowledge and want it done right.

Someone on another forum was really upset because he did his first JB, it worked, but then he had no signal so he restored and swore off JBing again. My guess, he didn't take care of the Activation box in Pwanage. So it can be just a.... bit... too much for some folks. And technophobes can't handle it at all. But, yes, it really is quite simple. Though I thought Jailbrakeme.com was TOO simple, because so many people did it and then had problems trying to add things, change things, etc.

It's like when people go out to eat instead of making their own food; they CAN make their own food but they don't want to because they know that chefs can make it better and/or they don't have time to
