  • iPhone Jailbreaking = Job Opportunities

For one tech-savvy student at George Mason University, iPhone jailbreaking has provided a great opportunity to break the bank. Kevin Lee, a senior studying computer science, says he works full-time as an iPhone jailbreaker, earning upwards of $50,000 a year hacking iPhones that belong to his "customers" - a pool that is widening by the week.

From a simple ad on Craigslist to a full-fledged business, Kevin Lee was profiled nationally yesterday in The Washington Post because of his successful and lucrative operation. “To be honest, when I first started, I did it for my friends, myself, but it has snowballed from there,” said Lee. “I was getting five to 10 customers a week, now it’s 30 to 40. I just had one customer from the Mongolian embassy who was moving to the capital of Mongolia, and he wanted to use the iPhone there.”

One has to wonder if all this attention will somehow result in Apple "contacting" Mr. Lee in some fashion about his extracurricular career.

Still, The Washington Post piece went on to detail how the jailbreak industry is "losing its anti-establishment character." One example of this newfound reality is the recent Toyota campaign that offered a free program on Cydia’s store, promoting the company’s Scion sedan.

Adding insight to the piece was MMi co-founder Kyle Matthews: “We’ve seen expansion across the board. The Toyota ad and theme, to me, meant there was a turning of the tides and that jailbreaking is becoming more mainstream,” Kyle said. “The industry just keeps increasing; there are even repair stores that will jailbreak for you.”

      lmao....

Anyway, would anyone here mow a bunch or their neighbors' lawns for free? Same concept.

Time to get back on track with the topic

Personally I find it fine to charge to jailbreak/unlock someone's idevice. Obviously for friends/family I wouldn't, but I see nothing wrong in providing a service for someone that doesn't want and/or know how to do it for themselves.

I have never charged . two many people have helped me and they give their time and effort for free - and believe me, they put a lot of time and effort into it.

The least I can do is help others, it's the only thing I can do to repay them.

That's perfectly fine for you to do. I unlock probably 10 iPhones a week as a side hustle out of my store (my store has nothing to do with iPhones). I can't take the time away from what I normally do at work to do it for people for free. I am always upfront if they ask how to do it and make sure that they never pay for jailbreak/unlock software. I also provide assistance with other iPhone related things for no charge (setting up email for example).

You are right though, when someone has gained so much from this community you should in some way try to pay it back a little. I use my time here helping people do it for themselves for free what I do in my real life for a charge.

The Dev Team don't take money. Who am I to make money out of their hard work?

Geohot does - but you would be surprised at how few do actually donate.

Chronic take donations but I'd hate to sort out who gets what!

There is nothing wrong with charging for your time and knowledge, just personally I have taken far more than I can give back so, for me, it's not an option.

That is completely understandable. It is just how comfortable you feel about it.

What it comes down to is your choice, I mean if you want to charge then thats completely fine. If you do not want to charge then all power to you. I choose not to charge personally because I absolutely love helping and explaining new things to people. Especially someone I know, so it's your decision.

      I'm sure we've already chosen though..right??

50k per year for jailbreaking? I find that rather hard to believe...
