  • ProSwitcher : A Free and OpenSource Multitasking App for the iPhone

Say What? A Free and OpenSource Multitasking App? What about multifl0w you say? Hope you didn't think that was going to be the last multitasking app to come to the iPhone. A few days ago we got wind of some screenshots and information for the new app.

chpwn & Ryan Petrich, developer of OverBoard, has announced ProSwitcher, another Palm Web OS inspired utility to navigate through the applications running in the background on your iPhone, much like MultiFl0w does, only much easier, faster and more intuitive. And to top it all off, it's FREE and OpenSource! The app is also being developed with the help of . The project actually started out as PreSwitcher, but the chpwn thought the name may cause some trouble, so now we have ProSwitcher.

The app will use a library called libactivator and allow you to select from a number of gestures such as flick to close, swipe to scroll, tap to open. The app is said to use very little memory and only runs what is needed.

No word on official release, probably a few weeks, but you can easily find the beta or visit Ryan's hub here: rpetrich's Profile - GitHub. And obviously you will need a Jailbroken iPhone.

Thanks to ltjbigshot & n00neimp0rtant for the tips!

this seems to actually have freed up alot of memory since i downloaded it...used to average around 80 mb when i would have a few core apps running on my 3gs (irealsms, phone, ipod), now i average 100-130mb free most times. hmmm

Is there a new way to have a themed background? The old way doesn't seem to work in the new version (1.0)

My ideal switcher would by the cross between ProSwitcher and Overboard. I don't want to swipe so many times to get to the applicaitons, and I want to know right away what applications are active on ONE screen. If we can have up to 12 active applications on the screen, (and scroll down if more than 12 are active, just like in Overboard), that would be my dream.

I don't need so many way to activate the switcher. Docked icon is not a good ideal because you can only activate it from springboard. Swiping of taskbar is not a good idea because you can't use it on full screen applications such as Sygic and Oceanus (full screen browser). Double clicking of home key would do just fine.

Haven't found a way to get the background back, but I did find a way to get the "Swipe Down from statusbar" activation option back.
Go into /Library/Activator/Events/libactivator.statusbar.swipe.down/ and copy Info.plist to your computer.
Edit Info.plist, set "Hidden" to 0 and upload it back to your iPhone.
Respring and the Swipe Down option is back.

Yes, I'm using Kirikae at the moment. I prefer it over ProSwitcher because everything is on one screen. However,it would be best to have it Overboard style, where you can configure how many screen to appear on one screen. It will make my non-iPhone friend really jealous. :-)

Which developer wants to take this project on? I don't have any issue seeing that as a paid application.

I'm sure the dev will add a gallery view for ProSwitcher.

I mean, look how many new features we got between 0.8-1.0.

I think the cards need some shadow (like the ones notifications have), just to give them a polished look and add some depth perception.

I really hope so. Let the user specify how many FULL screen to show on the single screen. That would make this the killer switcher application.

Also, why not allow swiping up from the bottom of the screen to activate it too, like in QuickDo? In that way, I can reserve the double click purely for iPod (or for some of us things like Camera, favourites, etc). Currently I need to do a SECOND double click of home botton for iPod. Would be nice to borrow some good ideas from QuickDo here. The swipping up action in QuickDo works regardless of whether we're running a full screen application, so it it far better than swipping the taskbar, which interfere with SBSettings and ceases to work in full screen applications.

Anyone experiencing any RAM load? I was running at 150MB free until I installed ProSwitcher, and now I seem to be around 80-90MB, even without any apps running in the background. I just uninstalled PS and am back up to 154MB, but really liked the program and would love to have it back if I can keep more free RAM available.

On a side note, I was trying to look up any apps that tell me what's taking up my RAM usage, so I could troubleshoot, kinda like a taskmanager for the iPhone, but had no luck. I used Free Up Memory in SBSettings, but it would only get me up to about 110MB.

      Thanks!

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but after doing the Lib Activator update yesterday my 3GS has been experiencing significant battery drain

I would like to see an option to blacklist certain apps. Probably the phone and email.
