  • ProSwitcher : A Free and OpenSource Multitasking App for the iPhone

    Say What? A Free and OpenSource Multitasking App? What about multifl0w you say? Hope you didn't think that was going to be the last multitasking app to come to the iPhone. A few days ago we got wind of some screenshots and information for the new app.

    chpwn & Ryan Petrich, developer of OverBoard, has announced ProSwitcher, another Palm Web OS inspired utility to navigate through the applications running in the background on your iPhone, much like MultiFl0w does, only much easier, faster and more intuitive. And to top it all off, it's FREE and OpenSource! The app is also being developed with the help of . The project actually started out as PreSwitcher, but the chpwn thought the name may cause some trouble, so now we have ProSwitcher.

    The app will use a library called libactivator and allow you to select from a number of gestures such as flick to close, swipe to scroll, tap to open. The app is said to use very little memory and only runs what is needed.

    No word on official release, probably a few weeks, but you can easily find the beta or visit Ryan's hub here: rpetrich's Profile - GitHub. And obviously you will need a Jailbroken iPhone.

    Thanks to ltjbigshot & n00neimp0rtant for the tips!

      In what sense? I used Proswitcher for a while when it came out and then switched to circuitous to give it a shot. I just went back to Proswitcher... I think it's preferable for a couple reasons. The animation is just cooler, first of all. Secondly I really like getting my springboard dock on activation rather than waiting that extra second to drop to the springboard. I'm using 6-icon dock and most of what I use often (especially multitaked) is in there.. it's nice to just swipe to background and click the dock icon.

      All-in-all these are minor though... awesome job by the DEVs. I hope they're making some bash from the donations. They ought to start charging a bit so they can make their money before 4.0 comes along and puts 'em out of business!

      Circuitous doesn't do what I want it to do. I want my multi tasking method to reveal my dock. If Circuitous changed to an "Cmd+Tab" sort of thing, with the Dock on the bottom, I'd be a bigger fan, probably.

      For me, I like my dock being there because I have a 5 icon dock, one of the icons being my "Apps" folder with my applications in it (organized by category folders).

      Install backgrouder and turn off native in backgrounding and then install remove recents. You can use the double click of the home button and have a proswitcher like app without the crapple's way of mulitasking. Choose your backgrounding style in backgrounding. Saves battery life as well since all of your apps don't open and stay open until you tell them too. works great!

      I'm not exactly sure about what you want me to do. Native is off and backgrounder is on. I'm not exactly sure how to get the "proswjtcher like" app you're talking about. Sorry I'm kinda slow.

      chpwn: So I'm a complete hypocrite. @aaronash has brought back multifl0w, and insanely, I've brought back ProSwitcher. Expect a release this week.

      On Twitter, its coming back this week cant wait, multiflow is nice but proswitcher is the best

      I'd like to try ProSwitcher. I have Multifl0w and it took awhile to learn how to use it.

      hmm, I think it would be cool if the stock backgrounder could just be modified so that you could have a preview of the open app screen instead of just the icon in the bottom.

      I've installed it but it continues to crash into safe mode. Any body have any idea as to the reason why. Any known conflicts with other apps?

      @allessence

      Which one did you install?

      BTW I have multiflow and like it a lot, and they JUST released an update for it as well, 2.0.1. I installed multiflow 2.0.0 this morning on iOS 4 with no problems, but noticed an update available a few min ago for it. Apparently some were having probs with 4.0/4.0.1.
